My first car was a Morris Mini 850,(none of your British Leyland rubbish !)
Floor start, sliding windows and a 2ft cranked gearstick. It cost me £40 as an mot failure. New rear subframe and an upgrade of Cooper head and bits to the back end, brakes and close ratio gearbox and shift, and it was a great little car. I travelled all over the country in it for a few years.. |

I was young child, my old man always had "projects". One was an old old mini he got for my old dear, bright yellow - white roof. He rebuilt engine, painted the album cover of a James album on roof (a flower). Wasn't cool at all.
There's a photo of me standing next to it, which I showed my other half and her daughter when going through old photo's and I said "there's me next to my mams mini". They were both in stitches as that's what they'd call a *vag, and still a running joke to this day.
*vag - I also remember getting invited to a vag festival once, no idea how excited I was.. No idea of the dissapointment when I seen feilds of volkswagens. |

My 2 sons own Minis, I have done just about every conceivable job on them. A few years ago their Mini club met at our house on the Saturday for the London to Brighton run. We had 12 Minis parked together in our street and nearly everyone came out to wave them off. It never fails to make me smile as you drive around in one how children instinctively wave at a Mini. |

"The car not the skirt.
Let’s here your British Leyland mini story. "
I had a 1275 GT, a 1000cc saloon, an 850cc Minivan, and a Wolsley Hornet. My mother had a Clubman Estate for a while too. My GT had a 1452cc offset bored engine, with a massively ported cylinder head, wild sprint cam (nothing below 2250 rpm lol), and a Weber carb. It used to beat the XR3 boys point to point, as long as I kept to roads where they couldn't stretch their legs as my gearing ran out at 95mph.......good times |

I also had a Mk1 1966 1000cc saloon I reshelled in to a Mk2 1968 saloon, but that's another story..... |

I have been lucky enough to have owned 6 classic minis over the years, a van, two pickups, two 1275GTs and a red hot.
Would love another now but it's finding a good one for a good price |

Ex Liverpool police pursuit car-mini Cooper S, old English white with a black roof. Still had the zip in the head lining to get access to the wiring for the blue light/siren. Was quite well known on the classic car show circuit. Sold it to a mini collecter in America about 19 years ago, 6 weeks in a container on board a container ship later it started on first turn of the key when he went to pick it up from the port. Often wonder if it's still going strong and making people smile ? |

This other person I know quite well.... he had a Mini City E. Well that’s how it started off.
In the end had 45 Weber carb, Iskenderain cam, Omega pistons, full Jack knight and LSD, , Manx racing head, in fact you name it, it was in there...
127 bhp at the wheels later. Sounds pitiful by today’s standards, but this was over 25 years ago...but did weigh 580 odd kg....
8-10 mpg meant it wasn’t really a road car...

Had one a long while back.
Was 2nd or 3rd car.
1275 gt in red
Full length Paddy Hopkirk soft sun roof.
Cobra superslots
Corbeau bucket seats.
Walnut 3 piece dash
Moss electric windows (horrendous)
Went like a rocket but was full of tin worm.. |

"My first van was an orange mini... didn't like the rain ...and got stuck in the grooves in road planing roadworks "
I remember both these with my red and black mini van with 850 engine. Not the most speedy on motorway! Andy |

There and to the left a bit |
Had two in my time - a white one that I ran into the ground and a brown one that I got on the cheap and had left parked at my Mum's flats for months after I got a new car - she saw a note under the windscreen one day asking if it was for sale - they offered £400 (which was double what I paid for it) and turned up the next day to take it away....the most unusual thing though was they paid the full amount in pound coins!! |

I had two. I forgot about the mustard van I had too. I bought it for £50 and sold it for £200 a week later. You could wobble the roof by pushing it sideways above the doors when they were open.
My 1275GT was great fun. Black with gold writing. I’ve still got the badge off the boot. |

I had MK1 1275 Cooper S. It had a low ratio final drive so was quick off the line and perfect for a twisting country road. Would love to still have it today, but it had to go due to lack of somewhere to keep it.
It did 96 mph on part throttle, and 96mph on full throttle as it had run out of revs (about 6,500rpm). It had been owned by the Cooper family, who had done various modifications to it, none of which could be seen, but that all improved performance and handling! |
