Cupcakes & morality

A female pastry chef has been arrested in Egypt after decorating cupcakes with assorted penises.

Given that the order was for the Cairo Sports Club she may have been making a point.

Sadly, the Egyptian authorities are misogynistic and determined in repressing anything that might interfere with their interpretation of religion and public morals, so I'm anticipating that the chef will be incarcerated for several years.

It is illegal in Egypt to be sexually inappropriate. She knows that so why do it ? If I offended against morality laws here in the U.K. should I be surprised that I am arrested ?

Perhaps the people that ordered them should also be taken to task, as well as those that ate them etc.....

They would be men though, so that won't happen.

You cannot say that for sure.

According to a source I read , not the guardian, the woman has had previous for this.

There were cakes and sweets in both male and female form. Photographs were taken of the women eating them and the photos were circulated.

Agree with it or not. She knew.

That's my view. Except I'm not sure the people who ate them should be taken to task. Certainly whoever ordered and made them, as they should have known it was against the law.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the laws of any country, those are the laws and breaking them comes with consequences.

Agreed Agreed but ...... I'm not so sure that making them is incorrect or unlawful or that the eating of them at a private party would have brought retribution but ffs........ putting pics on social media / when WILL people learn ...

Maybe they are martyrs.

Exactly.

As Timothy E Kaldas from the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy pointed out; On one level it’s hard not to be initially struck by the absurdity of penis cupcakes garnering the attention of state prosecutors, police investigators, members of parliament and the regime-controlled press.

At the core of the matter is not the banning of sexuality in the public sphere, it is restricting sexuality that is outside the control of men.

If I could, I would have highlighted the second paragraph in bold.

Egypt has a unpleasant, and ongoing, history of violence against women, sexual violence against women, 'Honour' killings, female genital mutilation and repression of women's rights.

No one here is saying that's right in any way. Just that it's stupid to break the law and not expect that being caught doing it is going to have consequences.

In my view the law and the history is not right in any way. But if you know that genitalia on cupcakes will be an issue, don't broadcast said cupcakes.

The female chef didn’t broadcast or share any photos. She made these cockcakes for a private male sporting club and the men shared the photos. Then she was arrested. Go figure.

I wouldn't dispute that they have. It doesn't take away from the fact that she gave them the ammunition.

She was arrested for breaking laws.

She has not been sexually assaulted ( as far as we can tell ) She hasn't been killed or genitally mutilated. She's out on bail.

The idea of what constitutes women's rights is relative to place and time.

I am not agreeing with the Egyptian track record. I'm stating a simple fact. She broke the law. This is why she was arrested.

It was for a FEMALE gathering. Females shared the pictures.

As far as I know.
