A Ford Sierra
My Dad bought it for £1
It was blue
It had a back wing of pretty much paper mache & rust and wing mirrors that flipped in
If I went above 50mph, all I could see through them was my knees
It used to freeze up on the inside
My niece was sick in the back of it after glugging too much Vimto
So, depending on the wind direction, inside it smelled of either anti-freeze, Vimto or sick |

Got so used to it breaking down, I kept a fold out chair in the boot so I could sit and wait.
Got totalled in a bad accident but saved my life. I still swear by that car. Many fond memories |

A clapped out Ford Ka with a wobbly steering wheel, you had to shout at your passenger if you went over 40mph. Oh and the rear bumper bounced against the bodywork where the self tapping screws had stripped.
It was crap |

A bright yellow Mk1 fiesta 1.1l
Had a full respray and then found out if I lifted the carpet by the pedals I could see the ground underneath as it was riddled with holes
Wrote it off after 12 weeks by driving it into the back of a mates 4x4, broke a plastic cap on his car and pushed him into my works training instructor and it wrote his car off too |

There and to the left a bit |
An original K reg Austin 1300 Traveller bought from a family friend for me to learn in - the back of the back seat used to drop down without warning as you drove along which always caused amusement amongst friends.
Didn't have it that long, and even less after I passed my test, was gutted when my Mum sold it for a tenner while I was away |

A White Ford Marina. I bought it for £150 in mid eighties, lights would fail almost every trip, either they worked or they did not and every other possibility in between, ie, put an indicator on and everything would start flashing.
Bottom of the car had gone, drive in wet conditions and the floor would be flooded.
It had an insatiable thirst for engine oil. I used to carry a 5 gallon drum of engine oil U had got from work in the boot to keep it topped up.
Battery was always flat so had to keep it on charge on a night to ensure it started in a morning. Spare battery in boot to jump it off to get home. On a long journey, electrics would start failing, ie lights if they was working would get dimmer and windscreen wipers would slow down. Alternator obviously not working.
After about 3 weeks, I had enough of it and bought a Ford Fiesta and sold the Marina for £300.
On the way to hand the Marina in to the garage, the bonnet came open and wrapped itself around windscreen and roof of the car leaving it all mangled. Took it to work and my friend hammered it out best he could. Garage still took it for same price.
About a week after I had got rid, the previous owner came to see me because the car had been involved in a crash and DVLA still had the car in his name. Upon checking DVLA had not updated its records and still did not have me as the owner and then I was to blame for the accident when they did.
So I then went to the garage, and they had not registered the car in their name yet and they had sold it a couple of days after I had handed it over. And the new owners wrote it off into someone else's car a few days later.
I was glad to see back of it. |

Morris 1000 Traveller
Smoke grey and with the wooden bits.
called it 'Maurice Trevalier' after Maurice Chevalier the French singer.
Front wings came adrift at the bottoms, as normal, but never experienced the often seen suspension failure.
Moved on to Datsun Cherries. Futuristic in comparison but not future proof where rust was concerned. Recently found out they used a Japanese version of the engine in the Morris. |

"My first car was a 1964 Hillman imp CJH 991B only cost £99"
I had a brief and salutary dalliance with the Husky version of the Imp. Ex TV rental van with covers or the side windows. At first sight an ideal shagn wagn but was well thrashed and was moved on fast.
Best remembered for the Coventry Climax engine. Named thus before orgasms became talked about. |

Called Lucy. (no idea why!)
the windows did not stay up.
After a night out (Volunteered to be the driver) opened the door got in and started the engine. My mates got in and were impressed that I had cleaned the car and got rid of the empty fag packets. tried to reply privately but you have blocked my sex!
It handled fine for me. Chortled along nicely and we did quite a bit of youthful touring and camping in it. Brakes were famously inefficient but what weren't in those days? One just had to drive carefully.
saddest thing was I got rid of it for £50. The four digit two letter number plate would have been worth keeping if only I had realised its value at the time. |

A 1968 G reg Triumph Herald 13/60, complete with a walnut dashboard. It also had a reserve tap on the petrol tank, which was in the boot. If it ran out of petrol, you opened the boot, flipped the lever on the tank and had an extra gallon of 3 star to get you to a petrol station.
I called it Heraldo. |

I moved out of home to Newcastle when I was 18yrs old.
I worked in Newcastle and the bus only took 15mins.
I've never needed a car to travel, public transport has always been cheaper and it's so readily available.
Now in South Shields the whole area is connected by the metro, so again, it's cheaper and I've not needed a car |

A bottle green VW bay camper bought with all my childhood savings.
Engine blew up week after buying it, then a second time a few years later. Couldn’t afford to repair it, became a garden shed on wheels and then sold it for £250.
That was a mistake...

I hear you.
One of my friends, a man in his 50s has never owned a car either. It's alien to me, but he says the same as you.
My car doesn't just get me from A to B , it's almost like a room in my home. I love getting a Maccies and eating it there while people watching, or a hot choc and sitting looking at nice scenery whilst doing paperwork.
The times in my life I've been car less for a while for one reason or another have been miserable. |

Fiat Uno here, 999cc engine but body was mostly cardboard and rust! Manual fuel mix, and when the radiator sprung a leak I replaced it outside my house in about half an hour (and I am certainly no mechanic! ).
Still, such fond memories bobbing about places with mates... (until it very comprehensively lunched it's gearbox... ). |

I think with me it's a case of, not missing what I've not had.
I would enjoy a car, going to different places with Mutley and seeing different sites for a day out.

This is an aspect I thought of when I made this thread.

I've heard of people naming cars, so I was interested to see how many have done this. |

It's a bit of a dull car, but I don't care. I only learnt to drive when I hit 40 as everything I needed was a bike ride away and much prefer to not be stuck in a car.
It was only the seperation from the ex and the need to move the kids about that got me driving (hence big car).
Would have much preferred to have stuck with motorbikes, but the roads don't feel safe enough for them anymore |

"A Ford Sierra
My Dad bought it for £1
It was blue
It had a back wing of pretty much paper mache & rust and wing mirrors that flipped in
If I went above 50mph, all I could see through them was my knees
It used to freeze up on the inside
My niece was sick in the back of it after glugging too much Vimto
So, depending on the wind direction, inside it smelled of either anti-freeze, Vimto or sick "
That was posh too
My other mates had an Austin Allegro and a Vauxhall Chevette |
