Question
When you turned 18 a man from the government turns up to give you £250000 in cash to do what ever you want with....the catch is...on your 65th birthday a person arrives to inject you to make you painlessly die
Would you take the 1/4 of a million pounds? |

I'm 65 this year. From my current perspective no.
When I was 18 I couldn't imagine EVER being 40 let alone 65. I can't say how I would have answered for sure but I can't guarantee I would have turned it down |

It's a difficult one, but probably yes.
Lack of money (mostly due to long term disability) has held me back my entire life. There is so much I wanted to do that I probably will never get to experience. So part of me thinks... yeah, if I could go back, take the money, I'd have an awesome time and with my health issues I'd be lucky to make it much past 65 anyway so it's kind of win-win in that regard. |

I would 100%. 250k is a good benchmark to start something big. 47 years to make and live the life you want. Some people dont make 250k in there lifetime. |

When I was 18 I would have grabbed that. Definitely, absolutely no question. I didn't see me making it much past 30 at that age and I'd have been laughing, literally laughing, at anyone who refused to take the cash. |

"Yeah I'd set my family and friends up and make sure there ok with world where living in be a just sacrifice "
At 18 , I'd have probably just paid my dig money a bit in advance for a change and had a bloody good time with the rest |

When I was 18 I would have definitely taken the money. I also have a disability that limits many aspects of my life. I'll never be able to work full time, for example. 250k would have made life much more manageable and I wouldn't have had to claim PIP or UC to top up my low income. I'd be independent and self-sufficient, which would feel amazing. |

I would probably have spent quite a lot on cigarettes, vodka and clothes. |

, yeah. I was 18 in 1974, imagine how far that much money would have gone. My rent at college was £8 a week. I think cigarettes were less than 50p a pack |

I was thinking the exact same, live a life full of experiences & die at 65 (which is old age as life expectancy isn't much higher than that) or live like I so now which is 95% of the time at home without it being a lock down & live older than 65! Nah I'll take option 1.
who really wants to be that live long that your fragile & can't do stuff for yourself & you need to be fed & wiped like a baby...no thank you. |

That amount when I was 18 would be the equivalent today of 1.5 mil..
250k in 1977 would be a truly life changing amount so my 18 yr old self then may have said yes..
But my Mum bless her would have I am confident have talked me out of it..
Cheers Mum..xx |

At 18 I would have jumped at the offer.
Not because it would have been a huge amount of money that I could blow on shit.
More because at that time in my life I had the opportunity to invest in my future business. I made the investment but it cost me dear, running 3 mortgages with interest rates topping out at 13 to 14%.
With that capital I could have made the investment and funded future growth from profit rather than paying of borrowing.
At 18, 65 is an eternity away and there is no guarantee you’d make it that far anyway. The previous 2 generations of males in my family haven’t made it past 65.
Life isn’t about how long you live, it’s how you live that time you’ve got. |

"I'm 41 and I'd take the deal now
I very much doubt I'll be here at 65
I thought the same at your age. I'm still here "
I have a strange outlook on what the future holds.
But we'll leave it at that for now.
I may speak of it another time |

There's no way I'd have said no to this at 18. Even now, I don't think it would have been a terrible choice for that age, although I'm so much more aware of my own mortality these days so I wouldn't take it now. |

London/Essex... ish... Romford to be exact |
Dunno if I could live my life in a sane way knowing my card is marked already. I'd probably not see my grandkids get married. I'd know that I wouldn't be growing old together with a loved one. I probably wouldn't use the money wisely anyway and end up with a bunch of hookers off their faces on my sofa, develop a habit and own a Ferrari which I have trouble parking each time I go to Tesco where I realise there's no room for the shopping either. |

At 18 I would have as I was really suffering from depression and wanted to die
Didn't think I'd make it this long tbh, so I'd have just blown all the money on good times first.
Though if I did that, I almost definitely wouldn't have lasted till the injection.
(that's all in the past now btw)

"No. Money doesn’t make you happy "
This is utter nonsense.
Have you ever been poor?
Money makes you comfortable which contributes to happiness in a BIG way.
At 18 I would have taken the money

This absolutely. I grew up below the poverty line and due to my disability, and after having been divorced, I'm there again. I'm fairly content with life: I'm housed, have food, lovely relationships etc, but 250k would have made life much less stressful. I would agree that money doesn't buy happiness, but there is a cut off somewhere. Below a certain amount the stress of trying to make ends meet can cause significant anxiety. |

I think people that make whimsical statements like money doesn't buy happiness have never been below the poverty line and don't understand x |

Money also can be used for a lot of good things and open up more options to things in life eg education, healthcare etc. |

I'm not sure 18yr old me would of managed well with that amount. Being put to sleep at 65 seems fairly reasonable hypothetically of course for the purpose of this thread.
I agree money certainly doesn't make a person happy, but being in a stable financial situation is far far less stressful, so won't be a contributing to anxiety etc. |

At 18 I joined up for a lot less and willing to give my life to my country. I now realise how naive I was.
So that idiot probably would and have spent it all by now. The older idiot would certainly weigh up his current options a bit more |

"Yes. 65 is a good age. A lot sont make it that far. Whos to say i would?"
Its a good age until you get there. I'm 66 and very active. The thought of passing away now is unthinkable.
When I was 18 I thought 25 or 30 was ancient. |

I would have at 18 too, now at 61 i think it would have had to be a lot more money than that.

Mot sure how much it would take"
If you take average wage as 25k then that's only 10 years you would have 47 years to cover so it would need to be at least 1.25 million |

True but at 18 I could purchased 4 houses with that sort of money.
Don't know how much you where earning I was on less then 2k a year started at 16 on £27.50 a week so was more like 125 years salary. |

Is it just me or is the painlessly die an added pluss and knowing when. Like others have said live and work to 50 then play for 15 years then go to check out. Even get to say good by to people the day before.
Can I pass on the money and book my jab for 70 Now |

im 34 and would take it now, quit my job and if the rona would kindly f off id go travel the world til it was spent then just get on with the rest of my life making the most of what i could til injection time
i understand why some people think time is more precious, but for me this last year if anything has taught me that nothing but empty time is worthless ... i don’t want the kids, so no grandkids to wait for, i don’t even know if i will meet someone to grow old with (already used up over half that 65 years and its not happened yet), for me its about what makes me happy in the now as i have no idea what tomorrow holds... i would much rather have less time full of enjoyable experiences than an indefinite length of time that feels pretty empty |

100% yes lol. I'd rather live a short but better quality life, than a longer but average one. After 65 you're past your peak anyway, live your best life while you're younger. At 18 that money could do so much... |

At 18 even being 30 seems a lifetime away. I wouldn’t want my life to end at 65, not when you see people in their 80’s still having a good life. I wanna be with my daughter as long as possible. But I dunno what 18 year old me would’ve done, I was even more stupid back then. |
