Can anyone tell us how food banks work? Do people get vouchers and they are only allowed to take items up to that 'value'? Or can they take as many items as they need? |

If you can't give food, you could also give time and volunteer. One of my local ones has a little cafe stop by facility so people who wait for food can also have a warm drink and biscuits. I'm sure it's not happening right now due to lockdown, but I think it's a lovely idea. I love the fact there are local fb groups where people can reach out and ask for help. The worst times sometimes do brings best in people. |

The one I was involved in had clients who were given vouchers by various agencies e.g. Social workers, doctors, educational facilities. They then took them to the food bank who have them food for three days according to the number of people in the household. There were limits on how many times you could access them. I'm not directly involved since I stopped working so it might have changed. |

We gave a nice cake to the local bank this Christmas
Unfortunately the guy who was collecting it though that he would like to have it himself and put a contribution in the bank
Not what we wanted as hoped it would go to be enjoyed by a family maybe

The one I was involved in had clients who were given vouchers by various agencies e.g. Social workers, doctors, educational facilities. They then took them to the food bank who have them food for three days according to the number of people in the household. There were limits on how many times you could access them. I'm not directly involved since I stopped working so it might have changed."

I know I can Google but for things like this 'real life' experiences mean more to me.
I want to know because sometimes I put chocolate/ biscuits in there because I want them to have something nice. But if they are on a 'budget' they may have to use vouchers on staples instead.  |

Depending on the size of the family the lead parent can choose up to the amount of things that food-bank deems a family of that size will need to suffice the next week, fortnight or month. This isn’t written in stone, IMO, but think it’s the basic fact |

In my local Asda they have a shopping trolley called Fight the Hunger which is collected by the local food bank. I tend to buy 4 pack of Asda baked beans 96p and Asda pasta normally 2 for £1.00 but just before Christmas 3 for £1.20.After I have paid I put them Fight the Hunger trolley and walk out with my shopping.It may not be much but it’s something |

they have us pay fulk price for goods they get wholeslae.if they let us pay the wholesale price we could provide much more food for them.

This is actually a very good point and something I’d not thought of before. I too tend to put something treat like into the bank but never really considered that the recipient may have to actually budget for it if that makes sense.
For those that do work in these banks or maybe or recipients of their services, what would you say is the most needed or valuable donations for you? |

Around Christmas time, Easter etc they actually ask for treats. If you use Facebook the local food bank usually has a page that will say what they're short of. I often put chocolate or sweets. At Christmas I usually put tins of sweets |

Yes I do, I clear out my cupboards once a month just before the "big shop" and make a donation. I always buy extra sanitary pads and Tampax to donate as well as food, no woman should have to be without basics like sanitary items. |

I’ve done it several times with a few friends where we’ve all chipped in and gathered a bit of cash up.
We used Asda and ended up filling four trolleys completely full. Handed them over to the manager who made sure they got to the relevant places.

Yes i do , i think its important that if you can help you should help.
There are children going to bed hungry , parents skipping meals to feed children. Women going without sanitary products to feed thier children.families who have to choose between heating thier home or eating.
Its a sad inditment of society that we have to have food banks. Tbe gap between rich and poor is growing. |

Agreed, it is a societal problem and I think we have a duty to look out for each other. Modern life and the digital age has changed how we communicate which has made us more internalised into our own world, and it is a shame. Years ago your neighbour struggling wouldn't of gone unnoticed

Yes, and I take great pains in educating people about food banks and that its not just the stereotypical “lazy benefits cheats” that need or use them!
I am thankful I do not need to use one, but I am grateful they are there just in case I do.

Me and a work colleague were talking about food banks a few months ago, I thought it was just for the scroungers and druggies that used them but he told me he used them once, while he was getting back on his feet.

Why should your taxes pay for feckless people who can't manage their already extremely generous benefits properly?
Food banks are a great idea. Everyone who gives to them consents to it.
If we are to get the government involved then it should be to drastically CUT benefits for people and replace them with foodstamps. This would stop the feckless wasting money that should go on food for their kids on fags, booze and dope. |

There are always going to be people who think that those who use food banks are somehow wrong or bad while mps eat in a restaurant subsidised by tax payers. Their opinions don't very often change and that's ok, we all have different views of the world.
A friend of mine thought you could just turn up and get food. I've heard numerous people say that "they" (meaning food bank clients) all turn up in cars wearing the latest trainers and smoking and various other "evidence" to support their belief that only the dregs of society use them. All I can say is never look down on someone unless you're helping them up. |

There is no need to buy food and then donate it if you don't want to, check out The Real Junk Food Project instead. They rescue perfectly good food and redistribute it for donations in time/money/resources.
It's a nationwide organisation and feeds anybody and everybody, not just those in food poverty.
The amount of food that is wasted in this country would feed this country. |

Foodbanks near me generally give to people who have a referral from a service such as social work. They give them a bag with a variety of items to last then a few days till they get paid again. The amount will depend on size of family and if they have pets and available per food will be given.
Treats are given as extras so I usually hand in a multi pack of something. Even something as simple as digestives is a treat to a lot of people and not expensive.
If you can afford it handing in vouchers for places like Farmfoods where they can go buy fresh milk and bread are appreciated too.

The demographic for food bank use according to the Trussell Trust includes quite a lot of employed people, or previously employed people who have hit hard times.
Unemployment has leapt hugely since the pandemic started, and a left a lot of people struggling. Sad to see such judgement.
We have paid into the system our entire lives and if anybody ever called me a 'benefits scrounger' because God forbid we fell on hard times, I would pull their arms off!  |

This week a ask for help was posted in a group of Facebook and I did a wee shop from the supermarket with basic food, some nappies and few treats for mum and child and I am thankful I am in the position to do it. |

After watching a program the other day with a young girl struggling with a child and a disabled mother and she said food bank was her saviour through tough times. And as I myself have lost my mother due to cancer recently I actually went and done a full trolley shop came to 65 quid and donated the lot to food bank mostly bought kiddy snacks and foods tgg hi at will be good for a family and drinks etc but yeah we never know what holds our futures so hopefully if I do good for people now if ever I need help at all hopefully it will be there to help me we never know what our futures hold xx |

Yes the list goes on for people who get more than enough in benefits from the state to eat.
But this is why i fully support food banks. It's a good christian thing to do. Those giving are also forgiving and doing it voluntarily. |

"Can anyone tell us how food banks work? Do people get vouchers and they are only allowed to take items up to that 'value'? Or can they take as many items as they need?
Foodbanks near me generally give to people who have a referral from a service such as social work. They give them a bag with a variety of items to last then a few days till they get paid again. The amount will depend on size of family and if they have pets and available per food will be given.
Treats are given as extras so I usually hand in a multi pack of something. Even something as simple as digestives is a treat to a lot of people and not expensive.
If you can afford it handing in vouchers for places like Farmfoods where they can go buy fresh milk and bread are appreciated too.

Yes, every time I go shopping I leave tinned fruits in the donation box, sometimes soap or hand cleaner. I think it is the right thing to do if you can afford it. |

"Me and a work colleague were talking about food banks a few months ago, I thought it was just for the scroungers and druggies that used them but he told me he used them once, while he was getting back on his feet.
Personally I don’t give to them, the taxes we pay should take care of everyone, unfortunately this currupt government make that not the case.

Yeah all the people who have lost their job due to covid causing businesses to close. Such fuckwits eh.
They get more than enough in benefits to eat. If they are hungry its their own fault.
Food bank clients aren't all on benefits. I believe even our wonderful nurses at times have to use food banks so yes not just for those on benefits
nurses, self employed, people on zero hours contracts, students in further education whose parents aren't able to look after them properly the list goes on
Yes the list goes on for people who get more than enough in benefits from the state to eat.
But this is why i fully support food banks. It's a good christian thing to do. Those giving are also forgiving and doing it voluntarily."

We gave to a local one just before Christmas & they have collection points outside numerous houses. They also receive leftover food from local shops that you can take in return for tins in donation |

I became very aware of how close we could be to needing help as T is self employed & was facing having to stop work with the 1st lockdown. I work full time but once the bills are paid there wouldn’t be a great deal leftover. I now try to buy a few things each month for the food bank sometime really sensible items others something that would be a real treat. Any unwanted Xmas presents go their way too.

"Yes i do , i think its important that if you can help you should help.
There are children going to bed hungry , parents skipping meals to feed children. Women going without sanitary products to feed thier children.families who have to choose between heating thier home or eating.
Its a sad inditment of society that we have to have food banks. Tbe gap between rich and poor is growing. "
You are right there pal, the gap is very big and as well with brexit and the pandemic it is important to help out too |

I don't shop for more than I need, but I do give regularly to the homeless folk who be on the road near my house. Sandwiches, blankets, old clothes, they are good people that have had a bum steer in life. |
