Inspired by another thread...
These days... (pre lockdown) your kids go out and... "text me when you get there" "text me and let me know where you are" "text me when you need a lift".... Those days... The 326 bus into down and walk home sometime after the pubs shut...
These days... I can't be arsed to go shopping, open mobile phone, order food wine and a takeaway to drop off in 4 hours. Those days.... Fuck its weds afternoon and all the shops are closed for early closing. Or... Wine from the offy, bread from the Baker, meat from the butcher, milk from the milkman...
You get the idea hopefully... So forumites...when you stop and think... What's changed? |

These days the older generation can reminisce about the halcyon days and share it not just with their family but online with everyone.
Those days, the family would sit in front of the fire and wide eyed, waiting to take their turn in their weekly bath and eager to listen say "tell me more about your youth Grandpop, did you really not have light switches?" and with the air of a wise, sage man who had seen many, many winters sigh and share his fountain of knowledge. |

When you could leave the front door open with the vestibule door closed and be safe. Even go to bed and not worry about someone breaking in.
The news was all about normal everyday things, and now it's depressing murder, violence, knife crime, wars, drugs too many too list. |

I have a second home in a sleepy village in France. You can still leave your house and car unlocked there and not be robbed. The only crime I have been aware of was a domestic abuse murder and the man turned himself in the next morning when sober. When I first moved there I had the spare front door key in my pocket with the address fob on it when I went out shopping and must have dropped it. When I returned home someone had posted it through my letterbox. |

These days "flick the switch to turn the heating to constant love"
Those days "damn! There's ice on the inside of the bedroom window who's turn is it to get up, race downstairs, clear the ashes from yesterday's fire, lay it, light it, nurse it until the kindling has caught, go out and get the coal and keep watching I until its properly alight? " |

These days, wake up in the night busting for a wee. Nip to the en suite.
Those days. Lay in bed until the last possible moment, hop skip and jump along the cold lino to the bathroom. Or if really unlucky pull a gazunda from under the bed and hope you take correct aim in the dark or brave the outside privy |

Now... What music shall I listen to? 10 hours of uninterrupted soul music.... Then... Take the album out... Carefully dust it, on the turntable... Click, crackle for 20bminutes...turn it over... Replace it carefully in the dust sleeve... |

The youngsters these days will never know how busy/what local town was like back in the day |

We had a phine with a party line used by us and 4 neighbours. Go to call someone, pick up the phone, someone else alrrady using it.
That and with no mobiles back then telling your mates " meet me out side Woolworths at 12" if they didn't turn up they were presumed dead! In the end we all took th3 the number of the phone box there and would ring that. Someone would always answer then stand outside shouting " Alan...is there an Alan..Someone on the phone for him" and reverse charge calls lol |

Despite communication technology making everything more immediate, conversely its had a detrimental impact on wellbeing. Its reduced our social skills, patience and made us more selfish. It has also taken away the journey to a destination. Eg buying a record or film, book is a quick download. Where as before it could be a daytrip with friends, travel by train have lunch somewhere etc. |
