Mention of two of my favourite films (Papillon and Cool Hand Luke) on another thread got me to thinking how many good films there are set in prisons - Shawshank, Midnight Express and Green Mile are more firm favourites and then you have the PoW camp films like The Great Escape
So what are your favourite prison related films? |

I never remember the name of it. Someone on here did tell me when I mentioned it in a previous thread similar to yours OP, but I still don’t remember it.
Robert Redford was a prison governor sent in to reform an out of control prison. I
I’m not sure if the name of the film was the governor’s name or the prisons name. |

Fairly recent film Starred Up is a good watch. Brutal but powerful. Also enjoyed An Innocent Man when I saw it years ago. Selleck on good form.
Honourable mention for the TV show Oz. No matter what I see J.K. Sommons in, to me he'll always be that bastard Schillinger. |

Vaguely recall Penitentiary
The others are all good calls though - Scum was very much of it's time and along with Quadrophenia a film for my generation |

Not seen Brubaker but having read the synopsis does sound similar - A prison warden infiltrates the facility disguised as a convict in order to wipe out the corruption that has seeped into it. |

That’s the one. It’s quite a long film and fairly intense as I recall.
Really good performance by a black actor who’s name I don’t know. He was a sort of trustee prisoner. |

Looking at the cast list am guessing it was either Yaphet Kotto (who was the baddie in Live and Let Die) or Morgan Freeman but guessing the former as Morgan Freeman is more well known |

This ^, of it's time so must be looked at so, but watched it on recommendation recently now it's on iPlayer. Connery is excellent, so are the actors who play his cell mates.
Otherwise it's the Stephen King films we all know and love. Although has anyone mentioned Alcatraz yet? 2 good films to be had there. |

If brutal is your thing, try A Prayer Before Dawn. An English Thai boxer, addict in a Thai prison. Not an easy watch obviously. |

It did because they didn't try to change the format so was just like watching a feature length episode rather than altering the formula to something it wasn't |

Talking of scum.. I can remember by local flea pit ... Nicking in when you're underage and watching a double bill... Scum and quadrophenia...when the projectionists name was Eric...

Now in the same era was a "prison camp" film which I can't remember the name of but others may... It was kind of a cross over war / prison camp / nazi / nun / porn flick... One scene stands out... The prisoners were forced to balance on the shirting pole by the nazi nuns... Lost their balance and ended up drowning in the shit pit.... Weird film. |

Spot on! There was no closing Slade down and relocating everyone to a prison on a Desert Island, or anything else that broke the situation in the comedy. |

I remember stealing a video (actual VHS video tape) from school because we used to watch clips of it in R.E, but never the full film. Escape from Sobibor. As a child I was obsessed with anything to do with the Holocaust. |
