Weight loss surgery and libido

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I had a sleeve gastrectomy* on the 21st December, have lost over 2 stone since my pre-operative diet which started on the 30th November. Having been big literally all my life I can't quite believe this is happening! I have always been sexually active, free-loving and confident but my libido does fluctuate.

I wondered if anyone here has had weight loss surgery and what effect, if any, that has had on your libido and sex life?!

*it's most definitely not cheating, nor is it the easy way out!

I don't know the answer but I wonder if it might have a beneficial effect in your libido? Maybe the more energy you have and the better you feel, the more you will feel like expending that newly gained energy...fingers crossed for you

Oh, and anyone who thinks weight loss surgery is the easy way out is quite frankly... a fucking idiot.

The amount of hoops you jump through is enough to make you almost not need the damn surgery in the first place as you're sorted from all the fucking hoops!

I had a sleeve last December and have lost 4 stone and just under 1 stone left to lose to get to my target weight. I went to a fabulous hospital in Instanbul for my op so only waited about a month to go. It only cost £2600 plus flights and I wish I had done it years ago instead of yo yo dieting for 20 years.

The early months afterwards were a challenge diet wise but I was amazed how well I felt after the op and recovered very quickly and have not had any problems since. I had the op primarily because I had a problem with my knees and was in pain every day and couldn’t exercise much.

My knees still ache in the winter in cold or wet weather but I am able to do so much more and walk my dog every day.

I wouldn’t say that it affected my libido - probably the opposite as losing weight and being more active improved it. However this year due to Covid has been awful as I am single and live alone so I have just forgotten about sex for the next few months.

Don’t forget that the situation this year may be more to blame with your loss of libido. The other thing is the first few months are very affected by your limited diet and amount that you consume. Your body will only allow you to heal from a serious operation and conserve energy for that alone.

If possible I would suggest sticking to just giving pleasure to your partner until you feel better. Once you can take lots of protein you will start to feel much better - also make sure you take all your vitamins - if the hospital have not advised on this I am happy to give you information of what I take.

Today’s is a new day, a new start - congratulations on getting through to having your op - I know it has been a long hard slog for you. Onwards and upwards!

I had the bypass nearly 6 years ago, it made a big difference to my libido, one reason was I got rid of my ex and as he was terrible in bed it was good for me to find someone who cared about my enjoyment. But mine has definitely increased, more energy and more confidence in myself has helped x

WAIT?! you mean you didn't LOVE your Milk diet or clear liquids phase?! you didn't enjoy looking forward to your cup of bovril daily?!

In all seriousness, I can only answer from the male side. It helped a LOT in all aspects of my life. my libido improved, I wanted it more, lasted longer, and in all honesty.. my dick grew. or rather.. I shrunk.

I was very lucky, had 0 side effects, or complications, had mine done on the NHS. thanks to a crap ton of cancer risk in my family, being a fatass got me bumped up the list! because despite my size I was a spritely dude.

If anyone wants to talk about it, feel free to PM me! I love showing my before/afters xD

Thank you for your input and congratulations on your weight loss so far!

I have fibromyalgia, so I am hoping that with the weight loss comes a little relief from that too. Although I am not looking for a miracle!

I had my surgery privately here in the U.K, a hefty investment in myself and something I will be paying off for a while. I have been on NHS pathway twice, and although I am more than eligible according to NICE guidelines it just wasn't happening. Very frustrating. My package is very good and I have so much aftercare, so I'm all set for that.

As for solely giving pleasure to my partner?! That made me laugh, we have quite the opposite dynamic haha

It's been a strange old year, hope this year will be much better for everyone!

Haha! I was incredibly lucky, my pre-op diet was very low calorie food based for three weeks, that was hard enough on the run up to Christmas. So glad it wasn't the milk diet!

I ended up going private here, NHS weren't having any of it despite being more than eligible.

Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your loss! Loving your new libido, hope I get mine back too!

I'd love to see your before/after photos if you don't mind?! PM is open

Reading my previous post I realised I should have said I had my op in December 2019 - so 1 year ago, not last December, which was only last month.

I didn’t have the milk diet as I have a dairy allergy and can only have a small amount of milk. I only had to do 7 days pre op diet as my BMI was 41 so wasn’t that deprived. My downfall is I am an emotional eater and have a very sweet tooth but that has slowly begun changing too. I have found the op changed my taste buds somewhat and I still have lots of restriction so I am determined that this will be a permanent change. Like you I didn’t have any complications and coped well on the liquid stage. I once stuck to the LighterLife milkshake diet for 3 months so one month was a piece of cake.

Well done on your success x

Can completely understand, I was 41 myself BMI wise! I too am an emotional eater, that is the biggest part of it. I used to work a very high stress job and would just come home and gorge!

I've maintained within a 1kg range now for over 18 months. so I'm happy with that, just got to work on tone now!

Well done - I find this cold weather makes me want to eat carbs but luckily I can’t eat much of them.

I haven’t had the surgery however I am on the list for a bypass due to a rare medical condition.

Probably the wrong thread to ask as it’s derailing but what’s it like? Pros and cons? I’m so eager to get mine done, I just want to be able to exercise without pain!

There’s lots of other things but that is top of my list!
