I need help which is the best at the moment I have come off the depro injection as although no periods was on it for over 3years but serious mood swings and yes I gained weight with it. Not good when your trying to loose weight. A bit weary of the coil heard good and bad things about its and the pill I fell prgnant both times on it so thinking about getting the implant what are the side affects to this and are there any other options. Currently just using condoms which are fine but I do like to double up. |

I had the implant a few years ago... it seemed like a miracle for a while! Then I put on weight, and it made me quite depressed. No periods for a year (which is good and bad lol). It seems nothing is perfect! We're all different though. Hope you find the right thing for you x |

Iv had the implant since October 2010 and it's been a very bumpy road for me! Iv had very irregular bleeding from it sometimes going for 6 months without a break (obviously not full period the whole time most of the time it was low flow) and it comes and goes as it pleases which is annoying especially when you get offered a meet and you can't go because of it! I was on the pill before hand and had to try 4 different ones before I found one that's agreed with me so now probably against advice of doctors iv just started taking the ones I had left to bring me off so I can go on meets! Also I lost 4.5 stone in 2009 and iv put 4 back on now I'm no way blaming the implant soley for this as I did go off my diet but I do believe it's contributed to my weight gain as I had all the will power in the world with food before I had it!
I would say go for it you can always have it removed after a few months if it's not for you, it could work wonders and many women don't have periods on it, I think iv just been unlucky!
Give it a go! |

i am no expert but my ex had the coil.. not sure which one, but i am sure she was told it was good for 10 years.
never had a problem with it. regular periods, no noticably different moods from before and no weight gain..
surely your GP practice has a nurse who deals with this to advise you of each type. |

Sounds like the pill is your only serious option of double protection then - notwithstanding your mention of two bundles of joy...
Do you use a spermicidal jelly to help kill any 'escaping swimmers' ? |

I would discuss with practice nurse, GP or family planning clinic, they will have access to your medical history and deal with contraception issues all the time.

My best mate swears by the Mirena coil. I was on pill and ended up one of the unlucky ones and had a pulmonary embolism lol. I had a fibroid that wasn't diagnosed and pill made things worse. Thankfully I've now had hysterectomy so no need for birth control lol.
I agree with others go speak to your GP or nurse as they can look at your history and discuss all options and you can discuss pros and cons and any issues you might have.
Good luck ! |

"i took the pill for 3 years after my son was born.
you have to take it at the same time every single day."
Thats where many people fall down as they don't take it regularly or forget the odd day and end up getting pregnant.
Anyway advice wise everyone has different preferences, the best thing to do is talk about it with more than one doctor and see what he advises as they will have access to your medical history and will give you the best advice. |

"I got an app tomz to discuss I figured as I am not playing next few weeks best get it sorted now x"
That's the best option all round and if you are not happy with what you are told make sure you get a second opinion. Just remember implants or orally taken pills need a little while to settle so keep unseeing condoms. |

I'm on my second implant, and it has been great for me, I was a bit unsettled for the first six months, as I had a light period every two weeks or so, now I'm lucky if I get one every six months that last more than 1 day, so it's been a god send for me x |

I have a copper coil - the one with no hormones.
I was going to try the mirena, but I needed to wait to have mine fitted by a consultant as I have a tricky cervix, so they put me on the mini pill for a while. It was both the best and worst thing!
Same hormones as the mirena and they really don't suit me! So when psychotic crazed me lobbied for an earlier appointment with the consultant before I killed someone they took me off the pill and fitted a copper coil.
My first few periods were heavier but then they settled down. I can't tell its there and it doesn't need to come out for 13 years - I even got £20 of m&s vouchers for being part of a medical survey!
So don't rule the non-hormonal coil out as outdated.
Good luck tomorrow. |

I have the Depo injection, and at the beginning I had serious mood swings, I now take vitamin B6 daily, and the mood swings have stopped. Evening Primrose is another supplement that can be taken, but I can't take that with the epilepsy drugs I'm on.
I'm lucky I haven't gained weight with the injection this time round. I did the first time I was on it, about 5 years ago. |

Copper coil here too, third one, this one is good for 10 years, no issues, light pain free periods mostly, and best of all no hormones so the mood swings r just natural and no weight issues!!!! All good in my book |

I'm so glad I found this thread as I'm in exactly the same position- i'm on my 2nd implant and would love to be able to claim my body back from chemicals.
Not sure I've found an alternative to suit me yet though... So looks like I'll be sticking with it for another 3 years

The thing is with the hormones, they either agree with you pretty much straight away or you have to stick at them for 6 months till your system gets used to them.I would have been arrested or sectioned before the six months was up (not including the days when I simply cried,.just tears rolling down my face all day for no reason ).
So if you can test drive them with a pill instead of having the coil fitted then do so. If all goes well have the mirena - I'm jealous of all the ladies who hardly bleed on it! |

I want to be sterilized, but no doctor will even consider it.
I do not want children, and due to earlier problems, it is unlikely I would be able to conceive anyway.
Last time I went to the doctors about sterilization, I was told to come back with my husband when I had been married a few years, and then the decision can be made together.
Made me feel very patronized, as if I was unable to make the decision alone. |

condoms don't cause side effects as they use a barrier method rather than hormonal - so no weight gain and side effects!
also they prevent stds' / stis' unlike hormonal birth control / coils.
lots of different varieties available with differing texture /flavors / colours / novelties (like those performa ones that are coated with a special benzocaine 5% gel to prolong arousal and play time before orgasm).. spermicidal jelly and a condom probably the least invasive method in terms of side effects considering your experiences.

I got sterilized on the NHS at 31. Had to fight my doctor for the referral but was well worth it.
Is finally nice to have my body back, after years of yo-yo weight gain and loss and 2 pregnancies (both on the pill!!)
And it means I can have Ma cream pie any time I like |

I as sterilized on the NHS in my late 20s and had a hysterectomy at 30 due to consistent problems with contraception and my periods. Best thing I ever did, I already had 3 young children so although had to put up a bit of a fight convincing the docs I won in the end. |

that's true although less likely to happen if applied correctly and used in conjunction with a reputable spermicidal lube water based lube.. also another avenue worth investigating if you don't want to go down the hormonal contraceptive route again..
a diaphragm used in conjunction with a spermicidal jelly for you and a condom for you sexual partner.
potentially would also probably provide a decent amount of protection against unwanted pregnancy. although because they're reusable most don't like the idea of cleaning them ect after playing! |

off topic perhaps, but if i had mental capacity and wanted to be sterilized surly a GP could at least consider that as an option.
Couples are offered IVF, abortions are traumatic procedures for something id more than likely result in having if i should ever fall pregnant. Its a well known fact that no contraceptive is 100% |

I had the same issues but I asked him if he was refusing to let me have it done. That it was my body and if he wouldn't refer me I would leave the practice and find a doctor that would!! He soon changed his tune. Stand firm, if you are sure and don't let them try to discourage you. They do this on purpose to make sure you are 100% sure of what you are about to have done
Good Luck x |

I have two points in the tubes tied debate
1. I wanted my tubes tied after my first son, did NOT want any more kids, well I meet my husband a year or so later and now have more, so Think Very carefully.
2. See a private doctor, I saw BUPA and they could do it for about 700, which isn't that much if you compare it to the effort/hassle of BC for the next 20/30 years... Your employer may even give you BUPA healthcare (you would still have a pay a portion) |

Just a note to previous posters who suggest spermicidal jelly and spermicidal products (including extra safe type condoms wither spermicide on).
The active ingredient, nonynoxyl 9 is not recommended by the WHO for people who are NOT in a monogamous relationship due to the risk if irritation and thereby a much higher risk of HIV transmission.
The NHS guidance also recommends against it, but some clinics still hand out these condoms
The stuff melts nail polish, makes my salivary glands go into overdrive as the tissues in my mouth begin to swell and it causes ulcers in my foof.
Please, if you swing don't use spermicide or spermicidally lubricated condoms.
After I told a friend about this, she switched and finally said goodbye to years of suffering from bacterial vaginosis. |

You will hear horror stories for every kind of contraception and of course success stories.
We are all individual so noone can tell you how you will adapt, its a case of trial and error.
I have the Mirena coil and I love it. Haven't had a period since it was fitted, apart from the settling down bleeding of the hormones adjusting to my body. But equally there are lots who it hasn't suited.

I have just had this procedure done. The NHS have been performing it in Southampton for about 4 years now. Being only 36 with no children I thought that I would be refused, but after a very long discussion with a female doctor and another with the doctor that performs sterilisations in Southampton, it was agreed that I could have the procedure (did take husband to the last appointment as backup). The Essure method is so far so good, it was painful, but that is because I don't have children. Recovery so far hasn't been to bad, I went to work the day after it was done.
I would say it is best to have it done by the NHS and an experienced doctor. |
