Well the fact is this - I have a friend or should that be ex-friend, who i have just found out shares a hotel room with his Mum when he goes on holiday!

It's not exactly illegal but then again it is a bit odd!

The fact that he is 41 and his Mum is a widow who is 76.

Just interested about people's thoughts on this?

Going on holiday with your mum in your forties is plenty wrong enough, but to share a room??

You have strange friends

I have shared a room with my Mum in Paris, and will share a room with my Mum in Seville. I am 45 and she is 70.

As long as we're not sharing beds, what's the problem?

I share a room with my 14 yr old son when we go on holiday, it's too expensive to book two single rooms therefore we share a twin room.

I think it makes sense in an economical way

I don't think that id last that long having to share a room with my mum though,id have to sleep with my eyes open and I think it would end up in a competition over who could throw the other off the balcony first

As much as I love her!

Why is it odd? I think it's nice he takes his widowed mum on holiday, my oh does the same. Shows he's a caring and practical person. Money they save on single room supplements he can treat his old mum.

Bravo to him! His Mum may well not be confident enough to travel on her own and, as someone pointed out earlier, 2 single supplements can add up. The fact they are close enough to do this and not worry is to be applauded, not criticised imho.

At 76 she probably doesn't feel safe being alone in a hotel room on her own. Was your intention to poke fun at your friend with this thread and hope to inspire a group laugh at someone who puts himself out for his mother per chance?

Cant see the issue, going on holiday as a single is expensive. I suppose the issue comes when one of them 'pulls'. Maybe they can do like The Inbetweeners and hang a hat on the door knob if they are 'entertaining'.

And before you say it, I know she is in her 70's, but even septugenarians get horny!

I had to share a room on holiday with my dad when he was taken ill abroad years ago...he was 68 at the time.

Insurance flew me out but wouldn't pay for separate accommodation.

To be honest, I was glad as my dad was poorly when he was discharged and I was glad to be close to him to keep an eye out.

All very innocent

why exactly is it odd ??? really cant see any issues with it . makes sense not only economically but maybe logistically aswell(if mother needs some care ).my father is 75 and still very much there mentally and physically ,some people wont be as fortunate and my just need help .

people go away with groups of frinds and share rooms all the time no one bats an eye lid at that why would sharing with youre own mother be odd? i think its lovely hes spending quality time with her while he has oppertuinty .

I'll hold my hand up... I think it's odd for a middle aged son to share a room with his elderly mother. I am not close to my parents at all and that is probably why I find it odd.

I do understand why 99% of the posts say they think it's sweet/ kind that he's looking after his mum.

I would think it less odd that a daughter would be sharing with her mum or a son sharing with his dad.

Just my opinion. I wouldn't necessarily think it was incestuous.... just odd.

My oh lives close to his mum. He and his daughters visit regularly. His brother and his family seldom visit. He's national director for his company, has a good circle of friends,

Each year he goes on holiday with his daughters and son-in-laws and takes his mum away, just the two of them. He attends all her hospital appointments with when he can, visited her every night she was in hospital recently and takes her shopping and for lunch every weekend.

I was not close to my parents, and selfishly I think he could spend more time with me, but I realise some people are blessed with parents they love deeply and want to spend time with. My ex husband is the same, he's moved in to his mums one bed flat to take care of her and has put his four bed house on the market.

I think it sad that it's seen as loneliness, not love and "gratitude" when an adult child takes a parent on holiday.

I hope my kids will do the same for me.

Nothing wrong with it in the slightest.

My mum has limited mobility and I take her out clothes shopping at least once a month.

Dad doesn't like it and finds it hard to push her round in her chair.

I have also just returned from a weekend away in a cottage with them and am hoping to get away with them again later on in the year.

I have holidays of my own and with friends too.

So many people get so wrapped up in their own lives that their parents become almost incidental to their lives.

I find that exceptionally sad.

As far as I'm concerned, they did their best to ensure that I was afforded the best start in life and I think it is the least I can do to make their later years are as good as they can be.

If other people choose to think that that behaviour is 'odd' then it says more about their _iews on life than it says about mine.

I don't think the OP got the answers he was thinking of... which is why he got a bit defensive about it....

I don't see any issue with it.... unless on holiday one of them was pulling and bringing strangers back to the room... cramping their style

but you wouldn't do that on a family break... so no problems...

maybe it says more about the OP than he likes to think....

the "friend" business was brought up by the OP, no one else... and again gets defensive...

still searching for an explanation of why OP thinks its weird... and why he thought we should mock his ex friends....

actually with ex friends like that... person is better off anyway...

As they got older I used to take my parents on holiday every year - they loved going on holiday and basically wouldnt have been able to do it on their own.

After my Dad died I regularly took my Mum away and of course shared a room with her. Memories I treasure - the holidays together, not necessarily sharing a room that is

but like I said, maybe it says as much, or even more about the OP than it has about the people who replied... after all, not once in the replies he gave did he ever acknowledge a lot of the valid reason... and the only time he did it was when one person agreed with him...

Hello Fabio

At the end of the day everyone is entitled to a _iew and there is no right or wrong answer here. Ok my wording may have got peoples backs up but that's life!

I am not defending anything here other than myself from personal attacks which a few people here have found necessary for some reason.

It is an interesting scenario and there is no need for all this aggression here?

Sorry, I don't see any attack.

Most of us have children/parents we go on holiday with so couldn't understand why you thought it odd.

We then went on to give our personal experiences of doing the same, which didn't seem what you wanted.

I thought the same as Fabio to be fair; you were looking to get a cheap laugh at your "friends" expense, then got tetchy when it backfired.

Dude, never mock a man who loves his mum. 99% of women will think he is lovely. Will want to take care of him and before you know it your ex friend is shagging your girlfriend, sorry EX girlfriend.

No, but if I posted something that proved to be inflammatory and/or confusing and/or misjudged and/or misguided in it's outlook, then I would have to accept that I was in the minority with my opinion rather than going on the defensive.

Nothing wrong with sharing a room with family members (male or female). I will be going on holiday with my mum in September and we have a twin room.

I have also shared a bed at different times with my mum, sister and niece. I wouldn't do this with male relatives though.

I have shared my bed with a few females friends too (absolutely nothing in it).

It's never crossed my mind that there is anything wrong with it.

Think it more odd that someone would find it odd. Wonders about the mind set of some folk. I often go on holiday with my parents and share the room. Not the bed I'm sharing x

Why is it odd? I think it's nice he takes his widowed mum on holiday, my oh does the same. Shows he's a caring and practical person. Money they save on single room supplements he can treat his old mum.

Not sure where your mind is and why you're making it sound sleazy. "

you are trying to turn this back on several contributors to the thread that somehow you are the 'victim' and are being attacked, thats poppycock fella..

Ok - The reason i find it odd is that they share a room when they could be in single rooms in the same hotel - I know people have talked about saving money, ok fair enough but they could find a better deal or cheaper hotel and have the single rooms. That is my thinking. I have been on the odd holiday with my Mum and we have always had seperate rooms. I can know here everyone saying that it is a preference - so there you have it!

i think its because you implied that there was something sinister about it and that he was now an ex friend because of it.

not all hotels have single rooms and single room supps can be prohibitive fiancially.

dont get so defensive when people disagreee with you....

no matter

Maybe she cant afford a holiday and he is paying for it all .. therefore a twin room is more affordable. ( how do you know what their sleeping arrangements are anyway. is it a double room twin room suite ?) single rooms are the pits usually overlooking the dustbins perhaps they wanted a _iew or a balcony ..

when you have to resort to inferring that an ex friend is odd and raising the point of 'legality' of sharing a room with his mother..

the only legality issue being one of incest, which is why you said it the way you did..

and just to gain attention..

thats not 'flamestarting' its a bit sad and pathetic, you need to look at yourself tbh..
