This morning was my kids' school Olympic themed sports day and I have come home swelling with pride...All 3 did amazing but it was my son who brought me to tears."C" has slight aspergers and with him the trait that emerges the most is his anxiety in social situations.Last year during sports day I had to take him home half way through as he had worked himself up so much he made himself ill.Even at the start of this school year he would not participate in PE or any of the role play they did in class as the thought of people watching him and possibly messing something up sent his anxiety levels soaring. Well, today, not only did he do amazing at all the events, he also participated in the dance his year did as part of the opening ceremonies, smiling the whole time...it was quite an emotional moment for me. |

My friends daughter seems to be brimming over with self confidence but refuses to do anything at school with an audience! Maybe one year eh? |

Really nice to hear. My oldest son has autism, he really doesn't like large gatherings either, he used to hide away. his first few months at school were awful, he hid under the desk all the time, at break he climbed into a tree and stayed there until it was time to go back in. The teachers ignored him totally. Moved him to a new school and within months he was taking part in a lot of the social side of things. He is at high school now, but no idea how he is coping as mommy dearest refuses to let me see my children. It was heart wrenching to watch him struggle to cope with groups of children. |

I am sorry to hear that you do not get to see your son...I have the opposite where the ex lets his gf dictate when he sees the kids and he does not always come for them when he should, letting them down...when my son was in reception from sept until december he only did 3 full days and 2 half as he could not cope,by the end of the year he was going full time. This year he has just gone from strength to strength and today for me was just the icing on the cake to see how well he was coping and enjoying himself

Children on the spectrum have to try so much harder to achieve things that other children take for granted and its so wonderful and uplifting when they go forward and achieve those things.
Enjoy every little step along this journey you are your son at taking together. xx |

Fantastic now build on that and see if he would fancy joining in in any local team sports . C has come on so much in a year that has to be down to you well done. I wasn't the best at sports when I was a kid I could have a game of footy with me mates but never liked playing competevly as it took away the fun side and become aggressive. Which sounds mad because I started doing martial arts and rugby which I love and that's difficult in a football mad city like Liverpool. Carry on the good work your deffo a _ummy mummy and that's without looking at your profile x |

"This is a heart-warming thread. It makes such a nice change to the "fuck the person above" threads.

Aww that's lovely, got me a bit teary eyed. Maybe you could get pics off one of the other parents? I can email vids from my phone. If you have email set up on your phone you could try that?
