A long time ago names were very deterministic. Surnames were not very common untill the 14th Century when John the Blacksmith became John Smith or John Smith and since trades ran in the family that surname would stick.
It is now only coincidental to find that.
Smith is still one of the most common surnames (certainly amongs Anglo Saxons) and I defy you to find a smith still working iron or a Mr Cooper who makes barrels......... |
