There's two types of bird flu circulating in the UK now. The H5N8 that's been circulating for a while (this is what's in Orkney and everywhere else in the UK). I was notified of a case of H5N1 bird flu yesterday too:
APHA: Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been found in backyard chickens near Hawes, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire. 3km and 10km temporary control zones and a 10km Temporary Movement Restriction Zone are now in place. More information available on gov.uk |

"We’ve had 60 Swans die in the past 2 weeks due to the avian flu..
Blimey.. this is worse than I thought "
Good job the science types are all over this then. The APHA have been reporting cases on a daily basis and working to try and contain. However, it's endemic in wild birds and you can't stop them from migrating/flying. Closing Stansted might reduce the spread of that other virus, but sticking a sign on the White Cliffs saying "no entry for avians" isn't going to work. |

I'm going to cook and eat my budgie for Xmas dinner to avoid it getting flu and for me to avoid eating a diseased turkey. |
