Tin town

Apologies if this has been done before but just watch a great music program and reminded me of the beatles album revolver.. Which is right up there.

What's your best album either for the way it makes you feel, special because you used to put it on and it reminds you of a special time in your life, or simply outstanding song writing and musicianship?

I'm probably going to start with London Calling.... The Clash.

Oh, this is a difficult one. So many album are brilliant and have special meanings for me, dont think I could choose just 1.

Here are some:

Machine head - Burn my eyes (1st album that really for me into Heavy Metal)

Bad Religion - Generator (Album and band that got me into Punk rock)

The Beatles - St. Peppers (amazing album and groundbreaking due to its imaginative recording and techniques. Theres a great documentary on how they recorded the album)

Massive Attack - Mezzanine (Amazing album which really made me appreciate the trip hop genre as well as great live show to follow).

I can't possibly choose just one

The Beatles I'd probably choose The White Album

The Who - I simply cannot have a favourite out of My Generation, Who's Next and Quadrophenia

The Stone Roses is up amongst my top albums of all time, as is The Specials

And Expecting to Fly by The Bluetones instantly takes me back to a brilliant period in my life. There's not a song on that album that I don't like...how bloody Oasis got more airtime than those guys I'll never know

"Great album, but why the Clash for you?"

It was a great time in my life, teenage years, massive jam fan.... Loved the energy of the Clash and how they developed merging reggae and before they went overly commercial. Don't think there's a bad track on it. I stick it on and listen through and smile like a loony. Great tunes, evocative, great energy...

I could add... All mod cons or live and dangerous or carole Kings tapestry or stiff little fingers or actually urban hymns the verve... God I love music

Nah not possible...not even close so you can have a list of albums that still get played regularly

The Liberty Of Norton Folgate - Madness

The Specials - The Specials

I Just Can't Stop It - The Beat

All Mod Cons - The Jam

Lexicon Of Love - ABC

Steve McQueen - Prefab Sprout

American Idiot - Green Day

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels - Dexys Midnight Runners

Glory Boys - Secret Affair

Neither Washington Nor Moscow - The Reskins

There are many more but those are the ones I still play most regularly, and would likely turn to if I couldn't think of anything to play, and handily form a top ten

East Calder

Biffy Clyro - Puzzle

A band coming of age, finding what works about their sound and moving away from the less mainstream sounds, while still keeping the anti establishment aesthetic. Every song could be a single but at the same time it's a concept album dealing with him mentally getting over the death of his mum to cancer.

Something else and it just never fails to surprise with absolute hard rock bangers, acoustic melancholic ballads and everything in between. Listening to it at first is just a wild ride, but when you pick up the thread of him dealing with his grief it just lifts it to the next level.

Not really got one.

Prince's Sign O The Times would be up there. The different styles of music on that album is incredible. And if you get the super deluxe edition released a few months ago, you get an idea of how much stuff he was writing at the time.

And another mention for Tom Petty's Wildflowers. In terms of songwriting, probably his strongest set of songs. Also benefited from a recently expanded release, as he intended it to be a double album originally.

Others would include Peter Gabriel's So, Eagles' Hotel California, and ELO's Discovery.

2p's had so many more uses back in the day - weight for a stylus, holding the ch*ke out in the car, making phone calls - it really was the king of coins!!

I think the reason there aren't more recent albums mentioned are probably due to the fact people will usually go with something nostalgic that sparks memories, which needs time to have passed to form that kind of bond - similarly for an album to be considered a "classic" it needs time to be afforded that label, there are some very good albums from the past ten years but I wouldn't name them because I either don't listen to them that often or perhaps am not sure I still will be in another 10, 20, 30 years etc - which is the guide I used for my own list further up.

Likewise the thing about people choosing albums with meaning rather than because of their musicianship - there are lots of albums that undeniably have fantastic musicianship, and even by acts I don't particularly like I can appreciate the artistry and skill behind them - but would I place them in any list of my own best albums? No because I don't listen to them.

To use an example Dark Side Of The Moon will always feature on "Best Albums" lists and I can appreciate others like it, now to be fair, odd track aside, I've never listened to it but would it be my sort of thing or ever feature on my personal top ten albums? Not at all

Interesting choices and very little modern material?

Eminem, 'Music to be murdered by' would be my 2020 go to album. In terms of mind blowing musicianship, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, U2, Michael Jackson, Prince and Bowie produced awesome material. But that list excludes Queen, Radiohead, INXS, Oasis...it's too hard

"Apologies if this has been done before but just watch a great music program and reminded me of the beatles album revolver.. Which is right up there.

What's your best album either for the way it makes you feel, special because you used to put it on and it reminds you of a special time in your life, or simply outstanding song writing and musicianship?

I'm probably going to start with London Calling.... The Clash.

It could gave been mine too but returned it to the record shop 3 times because the vinyl was warped and then gave up... even 2p on the stylus didn't help

2p on the stylus! Fuck me surprised it didn't scrape through to the other side of the record.

Now there's a concept kids won't get.... I mean what's the equivalent now of dust on the needle?

I'm intrigued there's not so much from the last 10 years people are popping up.... Also really intrigued that most choices seem to be more emotional as they reference special memories than mind blowing musicianship....

Hope you're testing a few out on this beautiful Sunday morning"

I could easily have said Pink Floyd The Wall or Sandinista by the Clash as personal favourite great albums. However as you requested emotionally, it’s my desert island disc album, Dancing with Strangers by Chris Rea.

So that’s my one choice and I’ll happily sit back on that beach and listen to every track

Appetite for Destruction - Guns n' Roses

I was 16 when it was released and bought it on tape to play on my boom box. I was reccomended it and took a chance before they were well known. It blew me away on first listen then they got massive I played it so much the writing on the tape was rubbed off.

"Very tough to nail it down to 1 album.

Depeche Mode - Violator

But close seconds for me are

Yazoo - Upstairs At Eric's

OMD - Architecture And Morality

Japan - Tin Drum

John Foxx - Metamagic

Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine

Ultravox - Vienna

Slayer - Reign In Blood

Hawkwind - The Chronicle Of Black Sword

Metallica - Master Of Puppets

"

You named two stone cold classics in there & they're not even your number one choice. Ultravox's Vienna & OMD's Architecture and Morality are both stunning albums.

I like Sound Affects the best.

The Jam 78-80 were probably the best band in the world with that All Mod Cons-Setting Sons-Sound Affects classic albums roll as well as the 78-80 singles A Bomb/Tubestation/Strange Town/When You're Young/Eton Rifles/Going Underground/Funeral Pyre/Start/That's Entertainment

Very true and Sound Affects does tend to be the "forgotten" album of the three but is probably the one where the band's style changed and developed the most

Country music is such a large and varied genre you probably need to be more specific.

My reccomendation isn't strictly country but suggest you check out "Blackberry Smoke" They are a Southern rock band with heavy country influences. As you like Kelly Jones I think Charlie Starr's vocals will impress you.

Those subjects are the foundation of almost all country songs. Three chords & the truth.

Chris Stapleton is another artist with a great voice and "Tennesse Whiskey" is a song that ticks most of those boxes
