Radio 2 is playing The Snake. It reminded me how good a story record is.

So which is your favourite story record?

There and to the left a bit

Down In The Tube Station At Midnight by The Jam - it's the perfect drama played out over 4 minutes with love, menace and violence as its themes

Watching the video for that one reminded me of The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

Dolly Parton is a supreme lyricist imho

If you listen to songs like Dumb Blonde, Coat of Many Colours and Bargain Store, you'll know what a good story teller she is

My all time favourite though is Smoky Mountain Memories, a little known song over here

I'd actually not heard this song until I saw her live and it actually moved me to tears

She described her childhood struggles and how her Dad wanted so much to improve their lot in life

He took a job in the car industry on the other side of the States, but despite the money being better, it destroyed him because he missed his wife & kids so much

Take a listen
