Have to admit I have never read any of the books so can only go by the movies and the TV series, but I cant help being left cold by Potter and more compelled towards his dark materials. Was just curious of other people's opinions.

Having been introduced to both series by my daughter when she was young I enjoyed both. Dark Materials requires more brain matter and is definitely darker in tone that the Harry Potter series.

All I know is that Ruth Wilson is probably my dream woman...

Not that that helps, but just had to get it out there.

His Dark Materials for me

Anything that annoys the Catholic Church is always worth a read

Team Lyra all the way.

I love the conscious decision to have a female protagonist.

I hated Harry Potter irrationally when it first came out then tried to read my cousin's copy when I was a teen on holiday. I didn't finish it.

Plus the films look bleak as fuck.

I've read the Northern Lights Trilogy about 5 times plus the Secret Commonwealth.

Glued to the TV series... love it (not as much as the books but they have done an amazing job)

Proper Pullman fangirl me.

My daughter does own the trilogy, I'm going to have to read them as I can't wait another year for series 3.

Yes, apparently they thought the Majesteria (the power hungry, controlling organisation who are essentially the baddies) bore too much resemblance to the Catholic Church. They tried to stop people seeing the films, clearly missing the irony in that completely

Not sure they're comparable. I didn't enjoy Harry potter, except maybe the last movie.

HP is targeted kids fantasy and adventure.

His Dark materials seems targeted to a more mature audience, encapsulating religion, philosophy, derivations of physics and conspiracy. ...

Besides, Mrs Coulter(Ruth Wilson) sports the British stiff upper lip

I loved the books and was so happy to see it turned into a film. Was disappointed when they didn't carry on.

Love the series, Ruth Wilson is brilliant! But then I loved her in Luther

I cant do any of the big fantasy type books, I just don't think I have the attention span or memory for details on who everyone is and what they are up to. Same for the films, they just seem to go on a bit

Not sure what I would call the books I like the last one I read was The Comforts of Madness about a catatonic patient and his life,so probably grim stuff

Both, for very different reasons!

It’s like comparing apples and oranges really. Although both fantasy, they are very different from one another. X

I grew up on epic fantasy so I always found Harry Potter too lightweight and could never get into it. I haven’t read His Dark Materials, but I’m enjoying the TV series a lot.

Love his dark materials, read the books while doing a ski season so have fond memories

You can clearly see the influence Philip Pullman had on JK when she was writing Harry Potter.

Both are good in their own way anything that gets kids reading books is always good

Absolutely love the BBC adaptation, it’s so spot on with the books unlike the movie of the golden compass.

Cannot wait to see series 3 and how they interpret-ate the world... hope it does not destroy my minds eye vision... love to be a fly on the wall in the art department meetings!

I’m like that with Terry Pratchett Discworld. Just couldn’t get into it, I did start with small God’s though!

Very much so. Both have their merits in different ways.

One thing a lot of people focus on with regards to Harry Potter is the first book, and partially the second, are VERY much targeted towards children roughly around 10 years old. The third book onwards goes much darker and more complex (though still keeps some of the childish tones) - the characters and story essentially growing and aging with the reader (at the time of release).

His Dark Materials from the start is quite clearly aimed much more toward an older audience. It's themes more complex and a deeper darkness. It causes you to think a bit more.

Both are enjoyable, both have pros and cons.

Try 'Witches Abroad' if you get the chance

It's a pretty easy read and the three protagonists are extremely likeable

Never read any of the books of either. Only seen the first Harry Potter film and didn't feel compelled to watch any of the others.

'His Dark Materials' series is OK but I can take it or leave it.

In my personal opinion His Dark Materials have and will always be some of my favourite books. When Harry Potter came out I tried them but found the first few to be simple reads, fun rather than engaging.

The Disk world, I have read every book but "The Shepherds Crown" and they are - as far as I am concerned - some of the best books ever written.

Watched a film a few years ago which was part of dark materials and a bit of the TV series and frankly couldn't make head or tail of it. Very tedious and boring. The HP films are quite entertaining in comparison. But like James Bond you know he's going to win in the end.

The church seem to struggle with the whole irony thing, just look at the fuss they made about the Life of Brian..

It's one of the best Christmas films ever made..

Something about how priests aren't fascists as fascists go around dressed in black telling people what to do

I enjoyed Harry Potter- books and films, which is rare.

I haven't read or watched His Dark Materials but based on this, I think I will.

In terms of writing, His Dark Materials trilogy of books are really good. I've only read a few Potter books, but even from that I think HDM is far better. More complex characters and themes, more imaginative world-building.

With regard to films/media it's not such a fair comparison between a multi-billion franchise, and an aborted trilogy and season and a half of TV. Still, I thought the Golden Compass movie was OK, and have enjoyed what I've seen of the TV show. Potter, some of them are pretty good wintery Sunday afternoon fodder.
