How big is your RAM? Is bigger always better?

Sorry folks, no sex talk here I just have a question about buying a new laptop. PC or Mac? I need it to run video editing software. What sort of RAM or other things should I go for? If anyone out there in Fab space could please help me understand how what sort of specs I might need, I’d be very grateful for any tips, especially those who do similar creative things using a laptop.

More RAM is always good. 8GB should be a minimum for video editing but depending on the resolution and quality of the video you'll be editing you may need to look at 16GB (with the possibility of moving to 32GB).

Do a search for 'laptop for video editing' as you'll need a decent CPU and GPU plus plenty of HD space. You'll probably be looking at pricier higher end laptops.

Thanks mate, that is helpful. Is there a minimum spec, as in 8GB of RAM that you mentioned for a CPU and GPU?

Hi,

I'd say you want at least 16 GB for video editing. Luckily this is becoming relatively standard!

As for CPU and GPU power, this will be rather more directly proportional to how long it takes to render the final video, in my experience. I.e. RAM is needed to actually be able to do the editing, but CPU/GPU (depending on settings when rendering) will determine how long it takes to get the final product out once editing is done.

I am by no means an expert, but these are my video editing experiences uning Adobe Premiere.

As for PC or Mac, I use a PC, but I have heard that this is the sort of thing that Macs actually do well. I am not a Mac fan personally, so I haven't tried

Historically Macs were better at creative stuff than PCs but when the 3D graphics card came out it levelled the playing field. A Mac, hardware wise, is no different to a PC nowadays and they are both capable of doing the same creative stuff.

Minimum CPU - Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X

Minimum GPU - Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060

Get SSD for the main drive.

Effectively you need a gaming pc. Humongous graphics card, ram and storage.

Be aware that you may not be able to upgrade RAM post purchase on some Mac laptops and iMac as they are configured at build. Plan for the future if you are looking at one.
