Good man, if people want to hate gin go ahead, but leave good single malts alone.
That being said I have never minded a gin and tonic. Also Sainsbury in its finest brand sell a very nice straight gin that can be drank by itself.
As for the guff about marketing I was introduced to single malts by a close Scottish relative when I was young. I was introduced to Laphroaig by a Scots friend. Marketing is not everything, quality is.

Good thread OP! I love G&T, but have not a clue re the nuances of the different pure gins.
I've often wondered, at gin tastings do the connoisseurs drink it neat? If not surely it's the mixer that's the defining feature?! |

Erm, thank you
I can't describe pure gin but it tastes and smells vile, I think the mixer is a necessity to mask that taste. |

Yes I get that, but if we're masking the taste I need to discover what's in it that makes it such a good drink with a mixer...confused? We will be! |

Everything is pr.
The metrosexual was pr and look how far that has gone and arguably led to all the changes in society now.
Cider had a big pr makeover in recent years.
People are gonna drink so might as well sell them something. |

Brilliant shop, although it was many a year ago I was last in, I was very tempted to buy a bottle of whisky recovered from the SS Politician, made famous by the Ealing Comedy Whisky Galore!

Without trying to bore everyone, there is a good reason why people who don't like gin or tonic, love Gin and Tonic. The molecular structure of Gin doesn't sit well in our taste receptors, and the same for tonic. However, when combined they form a new molecular shape which fits perfectly in with most peoples taste receptors. Since Gin has been a British staple from the early 1700's I think the last 10 years has just been a revival (thank god). At least now you can get a semi decent G&IT in most pubs, with bar staff at last learning how to pour one and use the right glass! Go away you awful highball glasses where they add the ice last |

And ill add this those who don't know if they like or haven't tried a decent gin or are not sure they like it ask for Monkey 47, as it comes with nothing but Tonic, you will either like it or not, then you will know. |

Thanks for that, I might have to start having tonic chasers when swallowing! |

Whiskey makes me want to throw up. Although I spent my childhood in Orkney Isles and remember once loving a bottle of Highland Park. I never been able to. Recreate that pleasure though. |
