Well, there wouldn't be much music around without music of black origin. All popular music can trace its origins back to the blues, jazz, gospel and soul music, played by mainly black musicians. Elvis drew heavily on blues and gospel music for his own early work and this continued to influence him. I'd say we have a lot to thank MOBO for, all things being equal, even if the immediately current songs aren't your cup of char. |

"I love Elvis and loads of black singers but that rap stuff to me is cronic. Give me Stevie Wonder anyday."
I'm not a rap fan either and didn't watch/listen to the awards, but there's a heck of a lot more to current music of black origin than rap. It's a shame if only a narrow set of genres was shown.
Just remember, parents in the 1950/60s told their kids that Elvis was inappropriate/a load of old cobblers etc, so every generation does have the general habit of disliking the music of the next/more recent generations, to a greater or lesser extent.
I know my Grandad (89) heartily disapproved of "that bloody racket", AKA the sounds of the 1970s coming from my mother's radio. He is a Mozart man, and anything else is frankly unacceptable. |

Why are there no Music of White Origin awards?
People (rightly) call for unity but it will never happen if we keep separating ourselves in terms of ethnic background.
There should be no black/white etc.
Why can't we be just people? |

It can still be crap and have a deep meaning, we like country music (as well as music of black origin) country music awards is nearly always cheesy and cringey! If it’s good it’s good, if it’s crap it’s crap, peace and love to all x |

See post above, listing non-black award winners. People of all ethnicities win the awards. It's about the origin of the music genre. But let's not get hung up on facts etc. Unless I've missed something and Mick Hucknall is in fact a black man and not a gingery white fella? |

It is probably only since the 90's that music of black origin has been appreciated. The early jazz was just called raucous jungle music of wails and jungle beats not fit for delicate white ears. It was only when jazz was played by white men normally blacked up (Al Jolson for example) did jazz start to become safe for the white ear. Early American black spirituals that have come to represent an essence of America, originally were not seen as real hymns but ditties for children.
Not to mention bebop under Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, which again was called just noise. The same with Orsett Coleman and free jazz.
Maybe we should mention the blues that was largely ignored in white America until the British invasion of the 1960's.
Also up until the 1960's and the end of segregation in the majority of the clubs the black artists could not eat where they were playing. Even if it was a mixed band the black members had to go elsewhere to eat.
In America for long time music was segregated and it is only comparatively recently that there was any crossover.
Hip hop and rap in the 70's and 80's was largely dismissed and it was prophesied they would disappear.
I went to a predominantly white school here where some people would call reggae treetop music, luckily I did not know then what they meant.
Music of black origin has largely been dismissed and the artists subject to discrimination (and please we all know examples of some that made millions but most were ripped off.
I won't even get into the arguments of cultural appropriation that still goes on.
When music of white origin has for 200 years been held up as the shining example of "proper" music not only classical and opera but by those that like country and western, and metal. So no, music of white origin still outsells music of black origin by a ton.
So I and others want to give respect to those that made their music in the face of adversity and laid the foundations for today's popular music.

Nothing stopping you setting up a MOWO awards, if that's what you want. The guy that co-founded the MOBO's is actually a white guy from Walthamstow, I know 'cos I've worked for him |

The MOBO awards is a celebration of music of black origin.
There have actually been non black winners & non black artists that have performed at the MOBOs for years.
Did you know that or did you see the meaning of the acronym MOBOs and allow your emotions to take over?
“Why can’t there be a white......?”
I honestly people ask those type of questions as a tit for tat response..

The very nature of it is to promote a colour.
As long as this tenuous award keeps going racism will continue.
"Well what about music of white origin" etc.
You can either tolerate a little bit of racism or none at all.
If it's the latter then mobo has to gogo. |

You think the MOBO awards that was founded after racism even existed has contributed to the racism that happens today or is it the name of the awards?
I’d rather there be no racism at all, but if you still want some to exist then that speaks volumes.

We have the Brit awards, BBC Asian network has an awards show. I hear no-one complaining that they exist, but please continue to decry the MOBO’s. Plus all the other awards shows that exist EMA’s, Grammys, Mercury Prize are very inclusive. The MOBO’s just represent a small snap shot of the plethora of awards shows yet ppl always want it to be stopped. |

I'd say 99% of all pop, rock, jazz, funk, soul, folk bubblegum, metal in fact everything except classical and asian has a black origin.
So what's the point in it?
Is it to remind the white people blacks started it(god bless Robert Johnson) or an excuse for a party on the global stage?
Either way the black part is superfluous if so many whites win it.

Why stop there? Why don’t we just have one award. We don’t need any more best female artists, or genres. Why not just have one award, best artist of the year and then we can call it a day. |

I was about to use a different type of language to explain my point but this those it better.
How can people be so ignorant to the MOBO's and what it stands for?
Its not about the black or white, its about diversity and what it brings to music. It's a celebration of different cultures making 'music' better or diverse and being recognised for it.
And just an fyi there are no 'MOWO' because the only fuc**** genre that could possibly be listed is classical mind you people will loose their sh** if a black classical artist was to win this award too.
Just be happy for god sake, happy for the diversity and what it brings to the table and let people celebrate it. |

They stopped making music 15 yr ago.... most teens listen to 90's, what's that tell ya ? X factor and Britain's no talent are to blame for most of it. Vowel should do a program for bands. People that can play instruments etc. Not be pushed through a autotune with blippy bloppy annoying tune in the background. Rant over..... |

I believe a young black artist called Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a Cellist.
And extremely talented I have seen him play and he is spine chillingly soulful!
His siblings are all classically trained too.
Justsaying

People saw the word ‘black’ and allowed their ignorance to take over, because to call the MOBOs racist is ludacris.
Because of the BLM situation that’s given people more ammunition to try and tear things down.

MOBO’s isnt to remind any one of anything it gives an opportunity for often overlooked music genres to be recognised such as afro beats, soca, gospel or reggae. There isnt the space to recognise half of these genres in larger awards shows such as the Grammys or Mercury prize.
Lots of awards shows become more genre focused: mtv video music awards, country and western awards, european music awards. Ppl seem to take umbrage with the title of MOBO’s oooh its got ‘black’ in the title lets create an issue.... please keep the same energy for EMA’s and Asian network awards. |

The title is Music of Black ORIGIN. Emphasis on the origin. Hence why non black artists do win some awards, because their music has black origins. I'm not sure why that's so hard to grasp! |

So it would seem that all but classical music owes it origins to black people?
Which means that since around the 1920's when the music renaissance began, not a single non black person has produced something that has inspired the sounds a later generation?
I'm calling bullshit on that..
Musicians of all creeds inspire the sounds of others..
It's self perpetuating with genre going in and out of fashion along with youth culture.
If we want to truly reflect the influence of today'. Popular music then we should be looking back to the musical fusion of 1850's America Which inspired the big band sound, blues, ragtime, the latter two which took inspiration from European music influences such as Spanish flamenco, music hall, French styled and vaudeville and added African beats and rhythm to it and heavy influence from the Bflat sound of the popular bands at the time. Even Asian and native American music had distinctive influence on musical styles at that time as people experimented with new sounds.
From then on in, we have seen each race borrowing musical styles from one another.
The Beatles using traditional Indian styles, the prodigy with middle eastern maqam and Rae.
Music does not have a single influence and should be celebrated for what it is and not for a skin colour it may or may not represent.

It's highly debateable as to the origins of modern black music, and it depends on the definition of "original". It is generally believed that blues, spiritual music, then rock'n'roll etc has its origins in religious music (hymns) played by early European missionaries to Africa and that this is where "black" music has its origins in chord structure and composition. Certainly, there were no instruments native to the African continent that could form the complex chord patterns that pianos and guitars can, and these were only introduced to Africa by missionaries. Later, when slavery was rife, black people had more access to these instruments in America. It is likely that local music styles in the South of the US, such as bluegrass also had a major influence. It is a fascinating, if contentious, area of music history. |

They were not aloud to speak their mothertongue so they developed a call and response form of music sk they could communicate with each other without slave owners knowing |

What exactly "came out of slavery"? The lyrics maybe, but what of the original composition? Just employing pure logic, pianos, guitars, brass were all the mainstay instruments of early blues/rock'n'roll etc - where did these come from? |

That's what I mean. It was a self taught freestyle way of playing/communicating. There was no lyrics involved that came later. I studied this for uni and if I remember correctly the slaves had access to these instruments |

No. Singing, composition of lyrics and "acapella" performance came a long time before instruments were involved in all cultures. You don't need a piano just to sing |

Well, as I'm sure you well know, only certain links are allowed but if you google "traditional African instruments" you will find mainly percussion and single note instruments such as the mbira, djembe drum and quite rarely, the kora - a guitar-like instrument but only single notes played with the thumb. Enjoy your research, it's a fascinating topic |

Are you deliberately mis-reading my posts? I said "no instruments native to the African continent that could form the complex chord patterns that pianos and guitars can", not "no instruments". Perhaps you can provide me with a link to show that "Africa actually invented most instruments" please? I'd be very interested in how ancient African cultures perfected the metallurgical skills to create a saxophone, for example. |
