My first name is boring. Growing up I always hated it. I thought it old fashioned and far too popular in my year group at school. I never liked it. I always wanted to change it but could never decide on a new name.
Around 17/18 one of my friends started calling me LuLu. A year or so later, another gave me the nickname looby. Eventually I was just Lou/Lu.
When I first joined fab at 18 I used Lu instead of my real name.
The only people who use my real name are my parents, J and a few older friends from school. To 90% of the people in my life, I am Lu.
Tbh, changing my name isn't something I'd given much thought to for years until recently. And I think it's cos I've been thinking about my past a lot...
I used to hate myself...i hated who I was when everyone called me by my real name. I don't call myself that.
I like me now. I like who I'm becoming and who I am. I am Lu.
Should I change my name?
Or just leave things as they are?
Do you think a name is important?
Do you like yours?
Have you changed yours? Would you?
More of today's ponderings...

I never liked my middle name. It was common and boring. I never understood why I was called it.
Then, one day I discovered it was in honour of a relative who, at a young age volunteered to fight in a war under a flag he didn't support so small nations including his own could have freedom. It was a choice that cost him his life, and he never came home.
Now I love my middle name.
It sounds like you've though this through and the only person you have to satisfy on the decision is yourself. |

Nobody calls me by my real name, as my parents have passed away.
It's strange, but I don't even identify with my real name anymore.
However, I don't think I'd change it, officially, as my parents chose it for a reason. That seems to matter, for some reason, even though nobody knows me as my birth name.
Does that make sense? Xx |

I used to feel exactly the same about my middle name.
I was named after my nan, who had what I used to call a "frilly" name. I hated it.
Til I grew up and realised how important to me she was.
She passed away two years ago and I'm honoured and proud to share her name! She was an incredible lady, I loved my nanny And I'd never change it now

My dad chose my name. I'm his only daughter and mum chose my brother's name. I wouldn't want to upset him either of course.

Growing up I hated my name, I was bullied at school because it’s different (or was back then, it’s more popular now) and then when I was at the age of going to pubs, people used to put the song with the same name on the juke box which would invariably result in me being centre of attention which I absolutely hate.
I’ve grown to love it over the years and now wouldn’t ever change it. |

I never met anyone with my name until I was in my 20s. It's quite common now and I hear quite a few kids with it. In some ways I hated being distinctive because of it, but never disliked the name per se. |

Wow it’s quite a big thing to change your name.
I totally understand, I never liked my name fir a Ling time as I’m Harvey so when I was at school I was either a Showjumper or everyone’s pet rabbit! (Fluffy more than sex toy).
I’m quite happy with it now and a lot of that I realised was coming to terms with his I felt about myself.
I don’t know your story but your name is a part of you that either you have to learn to love by discovering what it is you don’t like about it and where those feelings are rooted... or maybe part of the journey is to change your name and finalise the picture you want of yourself and the one that everyone seems to know and live already.
Not really an answer I know. |

I totally identify with that and it's one of the reasons i never went back to my maiden name.... So i would say it's such an important part of you either change it formally, or at the very least ask those close to you to start using Lu (or your preference)
We gotta take happiness where we can find it.. So just do it is my thought x
Even the pain of the admin involved in changing formal documentation will actually be a joy in this case... But you may need to get some things notarized which could be a pain |

I recently found out that my mum's intention was for people to call me by both my first and middle names when she chose them. When I was a baby my family used to use both names but eventually just started getting lazy. For 25 years of my life I had no idea about this. My middle name is much more common and Western than my first name, which is very obscure and ethnic-sounding. Therefore I often wonder if I'd have turned out a different person or if I'd have experienced less racial stereotyping if people had carried on using my "proper" name. |

If you feel like you’re making a fresh start and want to leave your old self and life behind, I say why not? Your closest can still call you what they always have so I don’t see a problem really. Your name gives you confidence and an identity so if it works for you, go for it I say! |

I despise my name. It's diminutive, juvenile, and common. (Top 5 girl name in my area the year I was born)
The only nickname for it is fucking awful.
It's out of a baby name book, not named after anyone, my parents did that on purpose.
The only reasons I don't chuck that crap out is that a) it'd kill my mother, and b) it'd be a pain in the arse. |

A few years ago I worked with 2 guys called Craig Nash. I thought it was unusual that 2 guys in a small work place had the same name.
I mentioned this to one of the ‘Craig Nash’s’.
His reply was - “it’s fucking weird. He was called David Barnes until about a year ago When all of a sudden he came into work and said he’d changed his name by deed poll to Craig Nash.”
I think he was a bit freaked out by this, I would be too! |

"I never met anyone with my name until I was in my 20s. It's quite common now and I hear quite a few kids with it. In some ways I hated being distinctive because of it, but never disliked the name per se.
You're not called Dave are you?
Behave! A person can't go a week without meeting a Dave, let alone 20 years...
I bought ma best mate Brother Dave a T-shirt for Xmas last year that said " Everybody Knows Someone Called Dave"
One of my cats is called Dave - she's lovely "

Hello Dave is currently not a happy cat - she doesn't like the cold and we have snow due on Thursday. That's her stuck indoors for the winter |

"My first name is boring.
Lu "
My honest opinion as a friend , dont you dare !!
You are you and you're far from boring , and to me you will always be what I call you ( you know what that is ) . Please don't, you are amazing as you are and dont ever change xx |

Oh bless her We had a little snow last week and miss Molly wouldn't go out. She sat on our bedroom window sill, looking out, trying to catch the snowflakes, it was so cute! x |

My real name is quite unique, I used to dislike it and thought about changing it for a while. But the older I've gotten, the more I like it and I'm glad I didn't change it. |

"I’m not keen on my real name. Only a handful of people from fab have ever got to know my real name. However I wouldn’t change it. My friends and family would laugh their heads off haha"
What would you change it to if you did?

My first name can be spelled different ways, as can my surname
It fucks me off having to spell it out phonetically, letter by fkin letter, every time someone needs my details |
