I’m a little confused as to how these rugby players can sue their own sport for negligence.

I’m guessing they had a reasonable idea it was a very physical contact sport when they took it up

Or is it just me?

I think it's more to do with poor medical treatment around concussions and other head injuries that is now causing early dementia in former players as young as 40. Often they were advised they were safe to play when they potentially weren't. Plus rugby union has changed massively in the past 25 years - until then it was an amateur game. Now the players are bigger, stronger and quicker so the impacts are probably more damaging.
