Were you ever told this at school?
And did you, eventually 'do better' ..not just better, but better beyond the wildest dreams of the teachers that were exasperated with you, whilst at school?
On the other hand, were someone who was expected to 'go far', only to find you didn't? Or, at least, not as far as you hoped?

I was once told that I set myself low standards and fail to live up to them.
I was told to start looking for work as soon as I leave school because I wouldn't get into a university. Surprisingly, I went to university straight after leaving school. |

I did incredibly well at school until my final year.
All the shit I'd been bottling up finally exploded in my brain and I went off the rails a bit, drinking, drugs, stopped bothering with coursework or revision...
I was always met with high praise from my teachers and told I'd go far...but that final year I fucked up horribly and my exam results showed it.
I tried to make up for it with a levels but failed miserably...
I used to regret it...but realise now it was never a choice, I was mentally ill and needed help.
The teachers were wrong...i could go far...but I wouldn't

I was always an over achiever, always great grades, great reports, mt teachers loved me.
Not much has changed. But at a cost. I beat myself up if my academic performance is less that what I deem perfect. And now my self worth is linked to how well I'm performing. Which isn't great. |

Perfectionism: it's a common condition, I believe - particularly, among high-achievers.

Perfectionism: it's a common condition, I believe - particularly, among high-achievers.

It was all ways could do better. The frustration some of my teachers had was pretty obvious. My frustration was, unbeknown to me, all consuming only to be discovered later in life along with ADHD, OCD and dyslexia. If I think about it too much it really pisses me off, especially all the "he's lazy" comments when at least one of them should've spotted something. |

My high school teachers were all convinced i'd either go into politics or become a high powered lawyer. They were a bit surprised when they discovered I went into healthcare instead  |

I was always could do better.
Took my O levels a year early, failed most of them and then was diagnosed with dyslexia.
Went into a fairly mundane industry but have done pretty well for myself.
I always tell the children, as long as they do their best I am happy.
If they try hard but don't do well in exams, it's not the end of the world. |

Yes spent the whole of my school life being told I was a failure. Left handed and actually received physical punishment several times a day for using my left hand for the first 3 years, they then give up trying to force me to be right handed, my schooling lagged and I hated the whole school experience.
Joined the army at 16, never looked back, several promotions during a 24y career and returned to civvy street a much more productive member of society. |
