My water supply won't make me sick, and if it does I can be treated
My food is mostly free of contaminants
I live a life of luxury my ancestors could never have fathomed, physically comfortable and frankly magical compared to even my childhood memories (a thing I can hold in my hand and talk to the world?)
I personally have a condition, completely in remission, which would have been fatal before Victorian times and difficult to manage before the 1950s.
I live a life free from the fears that so many of my forebears had to tackle head on.
And, today and every day, I am so profoundly grateful.
Thank you. |

lovely message Diamond..I don't believe in knighthoods and awards because they always go to the wrong people..but if they should ..its the people like our scientist and doctors who deserve them ..who in the main normally go unrecognised.. not to footballers sports people and celebrities who are paid obscene amounts of money ..for doing something they love doing and complain and behave in a disgaceful manner |

If earlier
In an Athenian comedy a man is introduced to the technology of a map. He panics when he sees how close Sparta is to Athens, and asks how Athens can be Athens, he doesn't see any jurors (a bit like saying America and lawyers as a rough analogy) |

Great post Swing, there's so much that we take for granted these days. If only only some people would appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes and there's not a miracle cure for everything |

Science has brought us wonders and remedies that enrich and extend our lives everyday... it’s unfortunate that some people can’t accept that we as a species are able to do these things..
As one of the groups on Facebook put it...
I Fucking Love Science! |

I don't particularly want to name it publicly. But it amounts to a deficiency, I suppose: at this stage if treatment ceased to exist I'd die. I've had the condition for over 20 years and (as long as everything is in order) a few pills a day cures it. The first treatment came into being in Victorian times and more reliable synthetic treatment in the 1950s. |

Yes I understand that it's sensitive to disclose that, but I guess like you I'm very lucky to live in the era of medicine to treat my crohns disease, ironically something Darwin suffered from.
There's many a thing people used to die from that is taken for granted now. I read penicillin singlehandedly added something like decades onto average life expectancy. |

"Brilliant thread OP. Often wonder if many of us would even be here today if it wasn't for the leaps and bounds made in medicine and scienc/technology. "
Apparently by 2018 smallpox eradication had probably saved 150-200 million lives. |

I have the same condition as Swing, and it's so simple to treat nowadays that I forget I even have it. But yes, it used to kill people. My Great Grandmother died with the same condition in the 1950s.
Swing - you know my thoughts on science and medicine

"No inventions"
Certainly. I'm not sure what a debunked political story about the pandemic has to do with anything though.
Anything can be used for good or bad. Including increased communication online |

Ah, but has it been properly tested? I'm not sure that 150 years is enough to understand the long term side effects, there could be all sorts of unforeseen consequences when you get to 160... |

Great Post. It is truly amazing how the vaccine has got so far so quickly. Some geniuses have had the foresight and the intelligence to prepare for this years in advance.
People don't understand science enough. The beauty and art and creativity of it is totally discounted assuming science is for automatons and nerds.
Thanks for your post. X |

C, I personally am sick of trying to explain where this vaccine has come from. Also thank you for what you do, it's phenomenal |

Without medicine and science I'd be deaf, blind and paralyzed.
Oh yes, and dead.
And that's all in the last 12 years. I'll soon be relying again on the neurosurgery gods to stop me being paralyzed.
I say hell yes... science and medicine rock! |
