Is it exclusion?

I was pondering with a group of friends and wondered; when you do thread do you try and answer all the people who post? Is it rude to ignore people you don't like? Do you just answer the posts that interest you?

If you post on someone's thread do you go back and check if someone has answered?

I am unsure of forum etiquette and am never sure

I'm the same, I think if you are active on the forums you lose track of what you've posted on and what your thought process was at the time.

I personally wouldn't worry too much. And sometimes it's easier to take conversations out of the forum and just DM

I feel obliged to try and hit everyone if its my thread.... Because I know what it feels like to be one of the few who didn't get a reply when everyone else seems to. But its hard work so I'm not surprised that people get skipped. I definitely don't avoid people i don't like

If I start a thread I like to acknowledge everyone who posted, I think it is courteous.

That said I know everyone thinks differently and a reply shouldn't be expected because you posted

It’s hard when a thread gets lots of replies. When it’s mine I tend to read all the comments so far and then my next response includes or addresses all previous points mentioned up to the point I comment again.

I'll try to answer most but recognise that isn't always possible. Sometimes I prefer to answer the comments most pertinent to the topic of discussion. If I don't answer someone it's not with malicious intent. If they interpret it that way, that's their problem not mine.

When I post on a thread I haven't started I don't automatically expect a response and certainly won't be upset if no one replies to it.

Depends.

If the same answer has come up multiple times then I may bypass.

If it's someone I don't like, and they don't like me then I'll generally bypass. I kind of have an unwritten rule that if I have a problem with someone that would overlap into the outside world, as in I would actively avoid them at a social, then I offer the same grace here and avoid their threads. I will not quote & reply either.

There's only a couple of people who's threads I refuse to enter for that reason.

Sometimes on threads I start replying to everyone, then get distracted by a digestive or something and that's that

That is a good rule to have. I havent been to enough socials yet to learn who to seriously avoid...hopefully next year I can look forward to that

My aim is to reply to every one early doors, but then I get distracted, bored and then my hearts not in it and some comments are impossible to work with, so I tend to wander off and annoy people on someone else’s thread.

When I do a thread I intend it as a group discussion. I read all replies. But I wouldn't reply to every single thing people say in a real life group discussion so it feels weird to do it on a thread so I don't.

I reply to posts, not really people. I'd prefer if there was a 'Like' button for posts.

Depends... if it’s a thread I’ve started, I try to reply to everyone that has acknowledged me in their post. It’s only polite and it’s interaction with users whom respond to the thread.

If it’s just a general thread I just chip in where I feel my comment(s) are justified.

I won’t fill up threads lamppost pissing ... it’s someone’s else thread, therefore I wouldn’t hijack their thread.

Hats off to those that reply to everyone, it takes some dedication. As long as the OP is involved in the thread I think it’s understandable if they don’t answer every post.

What I do find strange are the threads where the OP posts and then buggers off and doesn’t bother acknowledging anyone who has posted.

As for if someone dislikes me, I have in the past encountered OP’s who acknowledge every post apart from mine on different threads. If for some reason they don’t like me and are consciously ignoring me that is their choice, however it does make me post on their threads all the more.

All depends on the topic for me, when I used to do photo threads I liked to acknowledge everyone that took part. Other threads I would respond back to an interesting point or alternative view, but try to leave it open as possible.

If I comment on a thread I certainly don’t expect a response, as I’m just adding my opinion to the topic.

I think it's very dependent on multiple factors, the thread type, the way the thread has gone, the tangents it's taken etc, sometimes it's nice to just sit back and see how they develop and just chip in when appropriate, sometimes it pays to continually respond to keep a thread on track.

So I don't think there is any etiquette as such, just an individual call on a case by case basis.

I do sometimes wonder the converse though, for instance when you see threads at 100+ posts but on viewing them at least 50 are the OP responding, sometimes with just an emoji or a two word irrelevant comment, what the point is - there's one thing being "inclusive" and another going overboard.

For some it's almost like the thread is their property and woe betide if it goes off track, whereas for me, once a thread is released to the forum it becomes the "property" of the forum and takes whatever shape the forum decides

I like to start a thread then immediately log out too, just let them get on with it. Usually it slips off of page one fast if you don’t tend to it.

I feel like I'm hogging the thread if I reply too much. I like threads that evolve into a group chat, rather than lots of simultaneous 1-2-1 convos with the OP. I think different styles of curating can work though, depending on the OP and topic, no real hard and fast rules.

For me I suppose it depends on the type of thread I've posted.

When i start a thread using this profile i try to answer all comments, even those of people i dislike. On my other profile i rarely post on anyones thread let alone start a thread myself because someone i dislike a lot and who frightened me on one occasion, frequently posted comments on threads and asked me questions.

Over the years I've seen numerous posts / complaints about cliques on the forums, I've never agreed with them. However, I think it's natural for people to be drawn to the posts of friends and people they fancy - it's nothing sinister.

Depends on the post. Some things I think warrant a response to everyone and some don't.

As for ignoring those you don't like, sometimes it's for the best just to not engage with people who have clearly taken a dislike to you or who always post comments to try to rile other people. It just makes for an easier life.

Tbh Lily this is why I rarely start threads - as I feel I need to stay online to ‘babysit’ the thread for ages afterwards - and currently don’t have time!

Some people seem to be great at posting threads and either keeping them going or making them practically self-running though - particularly people like DC, Hot Ash and Erect Jim, City Boy, Not so Posh, PP and others!

I’m not that great - but then I don’t spend enough time on the forums these days to get to know all the characters!

There are loads of groups on various apps, there has been for years. They are good for arranging socials and I bet a high percentage of people on here are in one, even if they don't admit it.

I'm one of those who starts a thread and let's it run.

I always make it about the thread and not about me so there's usually no need to respond unless someone directs a comment at me or asked a question about the original post.

I've seen threads were the op responds to every contributor but I find those attention seeking as it always brings the focus back to them.

I've started threads that have died after a few comments and others that run their course but regardless I'd never bump one no matter the subject.

Care to elaborate on the 'the gang'? I have met socially and be one friends with a lot of people on here, so by gang, you mean friends then yeah

Just my personal experience of being ganged up on. You know you make a comment on the forums then one comments then the rest follow like sheep

I’ve met lots of forum users but I stay neutral with my comments etc.

From my personal experience. If you read above. You make a comment then the gang(sheep) come out and make you feel like not commenting again when it’s sad really as it’s a public forum
