Absolutely not, every Sunday in my childhood was plagued with country and western music, all those endless songs about maimed dogs and aunties that have run away! |

I adore Dolly Parton, but that's about it
I was so buzzing to see her live in Dublin, I got shitfaced on Guinness afterwards, fell down some stairs and broke my ankle
Dolly broke me! |

Looking forward to the rescheduled brothers osborne tour next year, seen them twice and they're fantastic so we're off to Leeds to see them again and make a weekend of it. Got to see Brad paisley at the O2 in London as well another I'd recommend if he comes across again. |

I'm in a bluegrass band. We do bluegrass covers of non-bluegrass songs.
One of the best bluegrass bands is Steve 'n' Seagulls from Finland. Check them on YouTube. |

I draw a distinction between Country and Western and proper country music. I have strong opinions about both.
The former, for me, is the big stetson and boots "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" commercial dross that is Satan's Own Music. I hope it dies a shitty death.
The proper country music is just folk music - and is some of the best music I've ever heard.
I could list a few examples of current singer songwriters and bands if anyone is vaguely interested but I'd suggest checking out the NPR Tiny Desk series of gigs online.

There's a wide range of Country these days. Traditional, pop, rock. I prefer the rockier end. If I had a criticism it would be that it tends to follow a set format. |

I listen to both, country and Western, but to artists that are very non traditional like Hayseed Dixie, Steven Seagull or Dead South (which is probably the most traditional among these). Of course, I like Jonny Cash and Dolly Parton, but they are non-traditional in their own way.

Seeing as it's you..:
The Civil Wars.
Jason Isbell and 400 Unit - alt country, Americana, call it what you want.
Drive by Truckers ("American Band" is such a very good, and pertinent, album)
Josh Ritter with Isbell and Shires, NPR Tiny Desk.
Mandolin Orange ("Golden Embers" and "Take this Heart"...well.)
The Avett Brothers (their NPR gig is definitely worth listening to.)
The Wild Reeds
Joseph
Ryan Adams - not Brian. I'm particularly pointing you in the direction of his first solo album after Whiskeytown (who are also in this list, even if they're not 'current') "Heartbreaker". Because it is exactly what its title says. Beautiful.
Oh and for the best cover I've yet heard of one of my favourite Dylan songs (very definitely in the folk/protest category) is Brandi Carlile's cover of his "The Times They Are a-changin'". There's a version on KEXP that really did give me goosebumps.
And not many people can cover a Dylan song well, in my opinion.)
Well, there's a start, anyway. |

The Civil Wars (mentioned earlier)

Uncle Tupelo (their cover of 'No Depression' is one of my favourites)
Cowboy Junkies ('Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning' is just a great song)
The Handsome Family
Early Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family |

I love many styles of music, a very wide range but I grew up mainly on country music the likes of Johnny Horton, Connie Smith, Jim Reeves, Carl Perkins, Ray Price, Johnny Cash, Carl Smith & lord knows how many others. Helped my old man played banjo & guitar so always plenty of musical education in the home. 'I walk the line' one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar. All those years & still can't finger pick like the old man!!! |

Uncle Tupelo were really good, yes! I THINK Wilco grew out of them, in part..
And Cowboy Junkies! Jeez, I've not listened to The Trinity Sessions in a long time! That's a throwback..
From this side of the water, check out Southern Tenant Folk Union - I've seen them live, twice, in very intimate (yes I know this is fab but you know what I mean.. ) settings and they have SUCH a good sound.
Oh and I saw a band called "The Hot Seats" play locally - they'd flown over from the States for a short tour. Those guys, quite honestly, were fantastic. Technically absolutely on their game and such great songs and a really good live rapport... love to see them again. |
