It's getting close to Christmas as we all know, this time of year especially with the pandemic that we are all going through is hard for so many people. So like I always say please please please try and be kind to people out there don't belittle them don't put them down and just try to be nice.

This homeless man yesterday walking just outside the Trafford Centre you could clearly see that he was a legit homeless person so I asked would you like a coffee and he was massively grateful I'm not saying anyone that you see on the street offer them a drink but just try and be kind to them there are people out there right now fighting the cold when most of us right now are still in bed * warm *

I like it when people do good things without feeling the need to post it on social media.

Random acts of kindness happen all the time, they're just not broadcast, no "fun" in that, unless you can virtual signal.

I agree OP

Kindness and basic humanity cost nothing

Sometimes a 'good morning' and a smile is all it takes to change someones outlook on the day x

Oh, not every homeless person wants to be given food or drink, just because they are homeless doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the choice, I saw an interview where a homeless bloke said he was sick of people trying to give him food from a well known fast food place, just because they are homeless doesn’t mean they should have to be grateful for everything that people try and give them.

Kindness has existed far longer than the internet, far longer than millenial, far longer than your fooking Go Fund Me cos my nail broke page.....

For some of us it is an integral part of who we are, our cultures, our religions , our sectarian beliefs........ our philosophies.

Stop with the lectures. It's the selfish shites who act like sodding born again Christians that get to me......

They've seen the light finally but become preachers.

Just join the club.

To add to that .... Social media is fantastic for opening up opportunities for individuals or groups who wish to give their time and/or money to others and are not sure how to do this.

I feel the intentions of people who post telling others what to do should maybe see how others are doing it already and ask how they can help.

Still, one cup of coffee to one homeless person is a start ..... innit.

I think people who shout about the kind things they do are possibly only doing it to look good. However...... I know many people who are at absolute rock bottom this year. If they feel good because of it, then good for them. If it pisses 100 people off, so what. It might encourage 1 person to do something kind too.

I’d say something that they can exchange for things that they want or need, whatever that may be.

How do you the people it ‘pisses off’ don’t already do good things without feeling the need to tell everyone about it, maybe the reason it pisses them off is they’ve been doing it for years without mentioning it, but someone does one good deed and posts it on social media, I think that would be galling to most people ?!

I agree. I'm not saying the pissed off people are unkind or that they do fuck all for others.

I agree they may be pissed off because they do loads of things secretly, then Karen posts how she gave 50p to the local school and she's hailed as a frickin saint.

However Karen may be secretly battered by her outwardly perfect husband. Or terminally ill. Or so far in debt she is scared for the future. So her getting a few Likes for donating 50p might just give her a boost and get her through another day.

I don't know Karen's secrets so I'll admit I'll still be thinking "Fucking Karen and her 50 fucking P!"

Maybe motivation shouldn't matter, but if you do something just to broadcast it and virtue signal - using another persons misfortune to improve your ratings - its disingenuous at best and active exploitation at worst. It can then also be inferred that people who do the same act of charity (without publicity) have the same mindset, humiliating those that dont seek the limelight and discouraging others from taking the same quiet path.

Is the benefit somehow less because of the motivation behind it?

If one takes the quiet path I'm assuming one doesn't want recognition so how would others receiving it be a humiliation or discouragement?

It's an act of charity in itself to allow others to take public pleasure in their kindness.

I'm not mother Theresa by any means and I don't like people telling me to be kind as if I'm not already (I'm not always, sometimes I'm flaming horrible) but I don't like the implication that mentioning a kind deed makes it worth less. It reminds me too much of my mother's bloody religious cliches

I've been on the bones of my arse (floundering) before now, and if someone had reached out and helped me, even if it was just a coffee or whatever, I would have appreciated it regardless of their(percieved) motives.

A random person gave me a fiver once when I was running on fumes. That made a massive difference to my week at the time and I still remember that person now, 20 odd years later.

If the OPs thread has made one person today be kinder then well played to him.

No need to get your knickers in a twist.

We could try asking what they need. Our local charity did just that and the care boxes provided by the community were distributed last week, sleeping bags, thermal socks, trainers, hat, gloves, new toothbrush, toothpaste and alike.

"I've been on the bones of my arse (floundering) before now, and if someone had reached out and helped me, even if it was just a coffee or whatever, I would have appreciated it regardless of their(percieved) motives.

A random person gave me a fiver once when I was running on fumes. That made a massive difference to my week at the time and I still remember that person now, 20 odd years later.

If the OPs thread has made one person today be kinder then well played to him.

No need to get your knickers in a twist.

"Oh, not every homeless person wants to be given food or drink, just because they are homeless doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the choice, I saw an interview where a homeless bloke said he was sick of people trying to give him food from a well known fast food place, just because they are homeless doesn’t mean they should have to be grateful for everything that people try and give them.

What should we give them?

We could try asking what they need. Our local charity did just that and the care boxes provided by the community were distributed last week, sleeping bags, thermal socks, trainers, hat, gloves, new toothbrush, toothpaste and alike.

Kind people don't need reminding, we do what we can by default.
