"I was diagnosed a few months ago with type 2"
well colour me ignorant.
i suppose its from years of listening to the mantra that diabetes is weight related, but i really honestly didnt think you could develop it if you were 'small' as it were. |

I had diabetes type 2 for about 17 years.
Since ive lost all my weight(ten stone in total) im no longer a diabetic, in fact my blood tests showed no trace.
I still have to be checked every three months for a year(got about two more tests to go. But im officially no longer a diebetic. They have put it down to what i now eat. |

Interesting. My doctor said the other day that as my blood sugar is ok now that i dont have to have the blood test every three months now, but still have to take the tablets though. |

The only reason there giving me blood tests every three months is to double check that everything is fine. They dont just sign you off here after just one normal bloody test, but once my year is up i wont have any blood tests for diebitis at all. It takes a year here before they discharge you, but doctor said the other week no trace at all, i think my sugars where 4.5 but cant remember. So no more yucky metformin for me |

Perky is borderline Type 2 (the less 'serious' one) - lot of it in her family and had gestational diabetes with each of her pregnancies. She also has something called Sweets Syndrome, which is quite rare and produces additional diabetes-like symptoms.
Keeps it in check with diet and exercise - she's out power walking with her Sketchers on right now, hence I am typing this.

I stand corrected.
I spoke with my diabetic nurse this morning when getting checked and it seems a Dr had misinformed me about it.
All these years I've been going for check up and every time I get told something different lol |

type 1 here
type 1 is when the pancreas doesn't produce any insulin.
type 2 is when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin.
insulin breaks down the sugars in food to allow the body to use it.
both are serious with poor control leading to the same complications.

Comment in relation to type 2 is misleading ... I am type 2, I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and take metformin. I am not overweight, eat very well and excercise. I am otherwise fit and healthy and always have been. There are many people with type 2 who have brought it upon themselves through poor diet and weight gain but there are other reasons too; genetic, or hormonal, viral infections and injuries to the pancreas can all lead to type 2 (or similar issues) One interesting recent link is between lack of sleep leading to pre-diabetic state.
I understand that there are close to 30 defects and conditions associated with either insulin resistance or insulin deficiency, which are the two basic mechanisms for diabetes so its not quite as simple as Type 1 = X and Type 2 = Y .... causes, effects and prognosis can vary significantly

There is a lot of statements and opinions here about diabetes that seem to be lifted from the Daily Fail.

I have always been told that once you are Diabetic you are always Diabetic; your blood sugar levels may stabalise (with diet changes, excersise, etc) but you are still Diabetic i.e. your pancreas doesn't repair itself to pre Diabetese levels. |

Borderline cases respond better perhaps.

sorry for raising the dead thread ... a lessor known symptom of diabetes, which being a swinging site might have some relevence, is the regular re-occurance of thrush. Of course thrush does not always point to diabetes but if you regularly suffer then it’s worth a trip to the docs. |

I only get thrush if my blood sugars are high and I'm on antibiotics at the same time. Luckily they have not been high for 12 months or more, they are usually low (2.5 to 3.1) and suffer with hypos |

other half has type 2 - was a late diagnosis as she was atypical (not over weight) now on insulin 4xday - but also has severe neuropathy in her feet. It is like having constant pins and needles this is one of the many dangers of diabetes |

Someone else said that a few months ago on the forum so i double checked. I am completely clear and definetly not classed as diabetic although i may get it when im older like lots of people.
