I just read an article that Lewis Hamilton has spent three years in a lawsuit with Hamilton watches claiming that they have no right to use his name. Apparently Hamilton have been making luxury Swiss watches since the 1880’s.

He is a fantastic racing driver, but what on earth was he thinking?

Love to hear your thoughts on this one, it has me baffled on why he thinks he is so entitled.

I think he lost the case, without reading into it too much I imagine his argument was that the watch company started pretending to have an interest in motor racing that they didn’t have before Hamilton was famous, trading off his name through association.

Similar to the reason that Toger Woods ended up opening his own Florida restaurant. Whenever he used another restaurant the fans would start to show up, the restaurant would do more business and he wouldn’t see any of the money.

Rich peoples problems.

What about the musical Hamilton about one of the US founding fathers Alexander Hamilton. Should the musical change its name ?

Yes definitely problems I’ll never have. Lewis is a brand ambassador for IWC watches, which are competitors to Swatch group which owns Hamilton watches. I don’t think Hamilton have anything to do with F1 in their marketing?

On the face of it, a wholly pointless claim.

Just some false outrage attempting to cash in on LH - getting click bait etc...

I doubt it was anything to do with Lewis Hamilton. These guys are companies in their own right and have their own marketing divisions, lawyers and so on, who look out for and protect their interests.

I suspect it will have been taken up in this way - nothing to do with Hamilton personally.

Other companies do it all the time, attempt to cash in on association ...you would try to protect your interests, in the same way if you had to I suspect.

It's not really as black and white as it sounds. Lewis's legal team have tried to overturn the watch company's recent registration of "Hamilton" as a registered trade mark. There was no claim that they shouldn't be allowed to use the name, just that the single word "Hamilton" shouldn't be registered as a trademark.

Realistically, I can't believe that Lewis's people hadn't registered it 10 years ago... but it's not really the story that's being pushed.

Suspect it’s not his idea, possibly didn’t even notice it.

If they wanted to trade mark "Lewis Hamilton" it might have worked but I remember reading that the judge said "hamilton" was a common name so couldn't be trademarked.

Wonder whether he was badly advised that it would stand a chance.

Apparently it’s his company, 44IP that brought the case. The same company that that avoided paying millions of pounds tax on his private jet.

Think some of it was IP44 want to bring out a hamilton branded Smart watch, and want to copyright that so that the hamilton watch company can't bring out a smartwatch with the hamilton name on it.

I find it quite interesting how many people are so quick to judge someone they have never met based on an article that is unlikely to be telling the full story.

Just saying

Indeed, it's a sensible explanation ...unlike the notion that LH himself notices or even concerns himself with such matters ...none of these types do - they pay people to protect their interests and rightly so. Anyone, whose name is part of their brand, would.

He has a line of TAG watches, so it may well have something to do with that. Again, however, I bet the action has as much to do with the man himself as some of the comments here have to do with the action itself.

Perhaps people find him a bit 'uppity', given that he likes to speak his mind on what shouldn't be controversial matters, but somehow are.

People love those who 'say it like it is' (Trump) until they don't (Lewis Hamilton).
