Having converted a bottom or two who were against spanking to liking it, I will add my tuppence.
Apart from the safety aspects there is no proper way to spank. Spanking is similar to all impact and that is, it is different strokes for different folks. Some bottoms like sting some like thud; some want bruising which is a different style from spanking to warm the buttocks. There is (amongst others) sexual spanking, punishment spanking and ceremonial spanking. For some it must be the hand for others it is any one of a number of toys. Do you spank with the bottom OTK, or over a table or holding just above the knees.
There is also the the question of the type of headspace being created by the spanking. I like to spank before a scene to create connection. However once on holiday my then sub played up so I spanked her for punishment. She then realised the spanking helped her feel grounded.
