By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I've been type1 diabetic for 3 years.

I've always had problems managing it and been in and out of hospital a few times DKA.

I inject Novo Rapid insulin with food, Tresiba 24hr booster at night. Carb counting doesn't work for me, but I know roughly what insulin levels to take for meals.

This last week my blood levels are swinging all over. I wake up every other day hypoglycemic and sometimes my insulin with food doesn't work.

Tonight I had my tea around 5.30pm, past out and just woke up. My bloods are 26.3 .(I've done a correction dose)This happens every few days also.

It's not a dodgy injection site, I change these weekly.

My diet and lifestyle hasn't changed so I don't know what's causing this. I've not had any hospital appointments since March cos of Covid (I used to see them monthly) but they are useless anyways. All they do is tweak my insulin levels, which I can do myself anyways.

I don't want to go to A&E cos every time I do, they keep me trapped on a ward for a week on drips and that ain't gonna happen.

Does anyone know what the fek is going on cos it's got my head in bits lol

Thank you

Are you poorly? Stressed? Not sleeping? They can affect your bloods.

Are you under the hospital? My mum is a diabetic and goes to a clinic and her blood sugars are monitored? If you are experiencing problems you should give GP a ring and ask for a review (can do it over the phone).

It needs to be stabilised and your doses may need altering/medication altering.

Keep a blood sugar diary for a week so you can see what may or may not be triggering the highs.

Somewhere

Certain medications can effect your glucose readings such as corticosteroids, statins or niacin.

OP, I feel for you that your medication has not been sorted, I really do.

With the greatest respect to other posters, I believe the OP should ask for a full review and / or second opinion but from a medcially trained person who has access to the history. Asking on a forum is, in my humble opion, quite dangerous.

In the monkey house

Medtronic Guardian 3 constant glucose monitor used with a minimed 670g works really well for my brother in law. He has type 1 but his blood sugars were all over the place (called fragile diabetes) got the CGM and pump and been steady the vast majority of the time.

I'm not poorly, stressed maybes, my sleep is ok.

I've had no contact with my diabetes team since March.

But trust me, the ones I see are crap.

They go through my blood monitoring diary, talk bollox for half an hour and send me off again lol

Hi. Sorry you’re having all the sugar swings, they’re shit! I’m on tresiba but do it at midday instead. You could see about changing your fast acting and ask about a libre. I was sceptical at first but it changed everything and it’s a good way to double check your ratios. I could see the 6hrs of 1.6 through the night that I’d sleep through! I also have to take metformin as I’m insulin resistant but I’m an old diabetic (28yrs) so they might not want to do that yet. There’s always a lot of tweaking in the first few years unfortunately. Feel free to PM if you just want to rant and bitch about the joy of diabetes x

I agree, not every GP can be an expert on every illness but.... I value the opinion of fellow fabsters on a number of swinging, music, whatever related things but as for medical advice this would be the last place I would consult. Perhaps I am too cautious, who knows - each to their own.

People also make connections with people with similar conditions. I have seen people come back and day that something they found in here that worked. But yes, advice should always be taken with caution.

The only way I'd catch Covid is from food shopping.

I've seen no one at all since March.

But I'm not sure id be non sympathetic, my health is pretty bad. More than likely I'd be one of those poor people on a ventilator

Definitely phone 111.

I'm not type 1 I have latent autoimmune diabetes often called 1.5.

I had a terrible time with my diabetes at the beginning of the year and had a similar thing where I struggled to have ongoing treatment because of the restrictions due to covid.

I wasn't getting anywhere with my GP or diabetes specialist so called 111 out of desperation and got emergency doctors appointment as it was the weekend, It was a game changer as the doctor prescribed me a different type of injection and haven't looked back since.

If you have the testing strips then I’d suggest that you test for keytone poisoning because of your bad control.

You won’t want to hear this but the experts are experts for a reason and trust me(or don’t) when I say they know more than us.

If you keep on topping up your insulin then you run the risk of having a major hypo which sounds like is happening to you.

Pumps are fucking brilliant, ugly but brilliant. As are the glucose readers in my opinion.

Again you won’t want to hear this but in my opinion the problem could well be you and your approach to diabetes and I say this from my own experience because after 23 years running at between 20 and 35 most if not every day my last hospital stay taught me that I was a cunt in my approach to my diabetes and taught me that after 23 years I really didn’t understand my condition at all.

So far because of my arrogance I’m impotent and when I orgasm nothing comes out but goes straight into my bladder and I’m on a swinging site because my wife whom I love more than chocolate and life itself hasn’t had sex in over 11 years.

Three of my toenails are fucked up so I have to wear socks at all times and I’ve had 13 lazer eye ops to stop my eyes leaking and to stop me going blind.

All of this because I knew better than the experts and didn’t listen.

I’ve paid a very high cost for basically being a stupid twat but I know that and I own it but seriously look at yourself and ask are you doing enough??

Best of luck op.

T

"Phone 111 for advice xx

I'm due another blood test at 10pm, I'll do that if I don't start to stabilise

Xx and I understand you dont want to go hospital especially at this time xx

Definitely phone 111.

I'm not type 1 I have latent autoimmune diabetes often called 1.5.

I had a terrible time with my diabetes at the beginning of the year and had a similar thing where I struggled to have ongoing treatment because of the restrictions due to covid.

I wasn't getting anywhere with my GP or diabetes specialist so called 111 out of desperation and got emergency doctors appointment as it was the weekend, It was a game changer as the doctor prescribed me a different type of injection and haven't looked back since.

It's amazing isn't it, diabetes is so common, yet the doctors and diabetes specialists are useless.

I've never understood that "

I totally understand where you are coming from and for a while I was bagging my head against a brick wall.

Have a look on the diabetes UK website as there is quite a lot of information.

Are you up-to-date with all your other checks like your feet, eyes and legs?

"If you have the testing strips then I’d suggest that you test for keytone poisoning because of your bad control.

T"

Thank you for this.

When I have problems my coping mechanism has always been to just ignore it, pretend it isn't happening.

Maybes that's my approach to my diabetes. Maybes I'm not caring enough about it and looking after it enough.

The long terms problems I understand are dangerous, increased risk of heart attack etc.

I think I swallow the bullet and get a pump

OP you need to go to AE and let them do a full check on all your vital signs.

You are clearly in need of medical intervention and expert assistance.

A recreational sex site is no place to seek solutions to your current medical issues.

"Dr Betnstein law of small numbers. Google it, you'll be set free.

Join the T1 forum in diabetes.co.uk

Read 'think like a pancreas'."

I was thinking of that as I went down the thread.

Daft question coming up.

Have you been given the correct diagnosis?

As too many big diseases have a lesser known disease that, keeps getting overlooked, by the hospitals, chemists and even authors.

Lots of old ground getting retrodden, time after time; with no new ground getting covered. Centipede syndrome, sounds like a good name for it.

Anyway...I was diagnosed with exercised induced asthma when I was eleven (1981). Turns out I'd been wasting my time with all the various inhalers.

Why because after changing GP practices over the years and telling them that I don't respond to the inhalers, falling on deaf ears.

So, eventually I was given a 30 minute chat with an asthma nurse, who finally listened to me and agreed that It wasn't asthma. But my symptoms were real and this needs a thorough investigation. Yippee, someone listened!

She couldn't say what it was, but that was a start, so with her referral, I went along to the hospital. This was the same place that confirmed that I was allergic to dust in 2005, that wasn't surprise, as the bloody stuff makes my nasal passages sting and makes my nose drip, drip, drip.

At the hospital I was given all the breathing tests, max in, max out try not to black out as my results were monitored on the screen, in that now spinning and darkened room.

I was finally asked some strange questions. One of them pertained to heartburn, something I know too well.

This was they said I had.

Dysfunctional breathing - I breathe in and out too shallow and too fast, at rest. I need reprogramming. Mechanics think of remapping. 25 breathes instead of 12 breathes per minute.

Deviated sepulum - bent nasal passage divider (was operated on some time later)

Collapsing right nostril - the surgeon forgot to do this, grrr.

GERD - long term heartburn, the valve to my stomach never fully closes, that explains vurps, hiccups and coughing at the same time. I now have tablets to dampen down those flames.

So as you can imagine, this makes skipping, jogging and climbing hills on my bike harder than it should be...as my VO2 max is 49 and that's not bad.

As for yourself, this should encourage you to demand better answers from the diabetes forum, clinic and hospital. Don't be shy in asking for a full investigation.

Gregory House would!

I'm Type 2 Diabetic and I went through rough times for a year or so, during which I messed up with my meds, plus I wasn't getting the right support from GP Surgeries.

Then, I was taken I'll, rushed into hospital and was given lots of advice about what can affect my condition.

But one key element was the Diabetes UK website where there is a Forum page, on which there are countless others all going through every related issue possible.

On there, I got almost instant advice, suggestions and links to help me through. It worked for me and all is fine for me now.

But one key point came through, in that not all GP's are tuned into Diabetes. Best options are Diabetic Nurses within GP Surgeries, or failing that, speak to Phlebotomists who visit surgeries often; they'll know who the good Diabetes nurses are.

Good luck.

We have had temperatures of 12 to 16 deg C in the last few weeks?

How about the OP phones the doctor asks for an appointment to speak to a qualified medical practitioner and has a full medical analysis of all factors that are connected to diabetes. The OP can then make a value judgement on what advice to follow.

With all due respect, this has happened many times to me before.

I know exactly what the doctors and diabetes team will tell me, they have told me it before.

I've tried something new and got some great tips and help and advice here.

Would the doctor mention a diabetes forum? No

Would they ask about stress? No

Would they mention the weather? No

Would they mention a pump? No

I had a black out because my blood levels went through the roof, something that's happened many times before.

Something I've mentioned many times before to my doctor.

I've heard it all from them before

"Adjust your night insulin, adjust your food insulin"

And thats it.

No explanation on what's happened, they don't know the answers.

What the OP is saying that they can and have asked doctors a the right questions and they still don't get anywhere!

I've encountered it before myself both with Diabetes and a secondary issue, with eyesight.

I was born virtually blind in one eye which could not be rectified. But the number of times when in Eye hospitals to deal with the better seeing eye, I have to go through the "protocols" of being forced to "see" with a non functioning eye!!

It's the same with Diabetes. Doctors aren't always clued up on the ever changing condition and need to learn that the patient knows their own body and its key problems best!

Unfortunately some medical professionals don't factor in that essential component when diagnosing!

If the OPs doctor hasn't helped, and her regular medical check ups cancelled due to Covid, what kind of medical help should she pursue? I fully agree with seeking help, but if that is not forthcoming, what then? This whole pandemic period has seen even urgent healthcare needs pushed away. My husband is now going for a biopsy on a suspicious lump on his neck that he's had since July. It was dismissed by telephone appointment twice by a GP and it's only due to tenacity and bloody mindedness that he eventually saw one in person. In NOVEMBER. Long story short, the ENT consultant who saw him on Tuesday cannot rule out lymphoma. Cancer. This might have been festering for four months but not properly addressed because of crappy phone appointments. He had to wait longer for the ENT appt than he should too, again due to Covid. But the consultant was clearly very concerned and has instigated all sorts of tests immediately.

Healthcare right now is in a mess and people cannot get answers in the way they should.

The OP had a period of blackout which is classed as a medical emergency but the OP seems reluctant to attend the AE of the local hospital for treatment. I need no lectures on the current state of clinical care in the NHS but clinical guidelines would suggest a period of black needs medical assistance as it may not be related to a known condition.

I agree re: the blackout however if the OP wishes to garner experiences from others with the same medical condition, she can. She was advised to seek medical help in the first messages above. It's her perogative as an adult to make that decision and also her choice about the extent to which she takes advice here. She has also recognised issues in her treatment which she can address, through the conversation.

"Bloods are 15.8 so insulin correction dose is working

Great xx

Is it????

It’s double what it should be and running at levels like that only does damage.

T

Yes it's great, because they were 26 two hours ago so they are dropping = great "

No op it’s really not great as you are out of control and you need to be in control and to be honest I get the impression that you are

Sorry op I was going to comment more but thought better of it but then did a toilet accident post.!!!!!!

I’ve been there and I’m embarrassed by my own stupidity over a 23 year period and are so grateful to the hospital staff and doctors here that set me straight a few months ago.

Best of luck.

By way of an update and to thank you all for your great advice and help, my bloods were 7.8 this morning so back to normal.

The doctor has just rang me back and I explained everything that's been happening.

He said to reduce my 24 insulin to stop waking up hypoglycemic, and to increase my food insulin a couple of units (no shit Sherlock)

I told him my insulin levels have been roughly the same for a few months, why this happening now? No explanation.

Why does this happen somedays and not everyday? No explanation.

He didn't ask about stress, if any changes to my diet, hell he didn't even mention about changing injection sites!(should have been the very first thing to ask)

He said report back in a few days if no better, goto A&E if gets worse and he's made a referral to the diabetes team at the hospital, but obviously given circumstances it could take a while.

I've rang the diabetes team at the hospital for their advice.

They are all working on the Covid wards to help out so I told the receptionist not to worry about it (what they are doing is more important than my little issue)

I thank everyone for your amazing help and love you showed last night and I'll check out the main diabetes forum to see if there are others with such issues.

Your "little issue" is just as important and you should really seek any help offered. What you are going through sounds hellish and very frightening so hope you get it sorted out soon.xx

Doesn't being on a keto diet help with diabetes?

"I've been type1 diabetic for 3 years.

Thank you"

Hiya Cindi,

Firstly, please do get medical help.

Secondly, have you looked into Libre glucose monitoring?

Thirdly, do you have access to a diabetic nurse specialist or dietician? They might be able to see what you can't?

"Doesn't being on a keto diet help with diabetes?"

If you have high blood levels it can, but because I'm type1 they can also drop too low.

Too risky for me

"Have you tried a keto diet

Carbs are fine, as long as I take the required insulin, but periodically for some mysterious reason the insulin says "nope, I'm not gonna work for this meal for ya"

my hubs is type one and and after about 10 years on one type of insulin his body just stated to reject it making him ill they changed his insulin and like magic it worked again you body maybe rejecting your insulin..

never give in hubs has been type one for 20yrs and some of the so called specialist have been truly awful if it was not for diabetes uk web site forums and talking to other type ones he would never got any real help i can honestly say that site has saved him so much hospital time because he goes to him drs or specialist fully armed and he no longer gets fobbed off....

you need to sort it and as an emergency if to past out for 3 hours thats not a good place to be as a type one .."

Wise words indeed.

Sweetheart are you on a sliding scale? Are you sick , having any symptoms ? That can greatly effect your sugars !!! It sounds like your insulin needs titration by your Doctor or Endocrinologist.

Carb counting has a huge impact. Do you log your daily blood glucose readings that can show whats going at peak times. And insulin pumps are amazing for Type 1 ... When I was a Diabetic Case Manager I helped alot of my patients get on those... it monitors and delivers your insulin.

I am worried about you now sweet Friend the best thing you can do is to go to a ER or Your Provider right now Sweetheart. You need to be seen because they are the only ones who can do it.

Sending Hugs Friend . Please go !!!

Xoxo

My bloods have been fine today, so no need to worry

I posted an update earlier in the thread following conversation with doctor.

It's ok to let this thread slide down to the forum pits

i am type 1 diabetic and had a few problems last year (not bad after 15yrs of diabetes)

my advice is to ask doctors for a freestyle libre test kit - you attach a sensor to your arm that stays on for 14 days but records levels every 15 minutes so you get a much better view of your actual levels through the day and night
