There and to the left a bit

Sad news, was a talented player and probably the worlds best around 86, when, despite the infamous "Hand Of God" incident he pretty much single handedly won the World Cup for Argentina.

His life was blighted by controversy and drugs etc in a similar way to George Best but he was an undoubted talent and I consider myself lucky to have been there the night he pulled on a Spurs shirt and took to the pitch

I did have the pleasure of seeing him play live in a football league v the rest of the world at the old Wembley in 1987. It was less than a year since his infamous hand of god so every time he touched the ball he was getting booed by the crowd until after about 20 minutes he did one of the most deliberate handballs. The whole crowd shouted handball and he just shrugged his shoulders and smiled.

I have seen it, he was a god in Naples. What makes him the best is the fact he played for ordinary teams and made them winners, Messi & Ronaldo are great but even they haven’t done that

Agreed re the second goal - and the fact he then went on to replicate it pretty much in the semi-final against Belgium just made it even better.

Actually "everyone" talking about the Hand Of God goal should have the word "English" after everyone

Personally this Scottish ska band summed up the "Hand Of God" perfectly

Was he the best player that ever lived? Really don't think there will ever be a definitive answer to such a subjective question though - different times, different styles, different science and technology even all make it impossible to declare one player better over another.

What is undeniable though is he was *one of the* best players ever and certainly up there with Pele, Cruyff, Eusebio, Messi and others whose names always come to mind when thinking of the best players.

failed 2 drug tests at world cups.

remembered for cheating on the world stage with the 'hand of god' bollocks.

fired a rifle at reporters when he didnt like the questioning.

in one world cup final against germany he and his fellow teammates bullied and shoulder charged the ref when fouls were given against them.

as a manager players hated him and often had to be pulled away because they wanted to belt the bastard.

just because he is dead people shouldnt just conveniently forget what an asshole he was. only time he played well he was out of his brain doped up.

He dragged a team who had never won anything to 2 titles and a UEFA cup and dragged argentina to win the world cup.

The players you mentioned are great but not in Maradona class.

Imho

He even compared a goalkeeper with maradona "

A great player is a great player regardless of position

I just listed great players... Sir Bobby Moore was a defender

(Unofficially knighted by WHU fans.... before you correct it)

failed 2 drug tests at world cups.

remembered for cheating on the world stage with the 'hand of god' bollocks.

fired a rifle at reporters when he didnt like the questioning.

in one world cup final against germany he and his fellow teammates bullied and shoulder charged the ref when fouls were given against them.

as a manager players hated him and often had to be pulled away because they wanted to belt the bastard.

just because he is dead people shouldnt just conveniently forget what an asshole he was. only time he played well he was out of his brain doped up.

Im sure Wales will agree with the scots statement . Its not like the Germans are bitter about 1966, with that dodgy decision when the ball hit the line and not over it."

They havent gone about it for the last 50 years like the hand of god.

Shilton asked for an apology and Maradona told him to fuck off.

I think modern footballers probably cheat more than Maradona did. He's remembered as a cheat because he hand balled against England. If he'd been seen by the ref, he'd probably have shrugged his shoulders and smiled. I'm sure that players have done worse before and since.

As usual when labelling someone 'greatest ever' it depends on what you're basing it on. In Maradona's case I' score him as follows:

Deception 10/10

Vision 3/10

Fitness 5/10

Ability 8/10

So no, not even near the greatest ever, especially when you consider players decades ago that did not have the luxury of modern technology, science etc and were still head and shoulders above him.

"Sad news, was a talented player and probably the worlds best around 86, when, despite the infamous "Hand Of God" incident he pretty much single handedly won the World Cup for Argentina.

His life was blighted by controversy and drugs etc in a similar way to George Best but he was an undoubted talent and I consider myself lucky to have been there the night he pulled on a Spurs shirt and took to the pitch

everyone always talks about the "hand of god" goal from that game that put argentina 1 up.... but the 2nd goal he scored in that game may still be the best ever goal scored in a world cup finals....

he delighted and annoyed people in the same measure!

any football fan must watch the maradona documentry about his time at Napoli.... it is a fantastic watch!

I have seen it, he was a god in Naples. What makes him the best is the fact he played for ordinary teams and made them winners, Messi & Ronaldo are great but even they haven’t done that "

Have to agree with this. He has raised the game of mediocre players around him and gone on to win titles.

Oh, the pain.

But I do think this ridiculous level of adulation wasn't warranted. He was good. Maybe great. But NOT the greatest."

He wasnt only great he had that rare knack of making players around him even better.

i tell it as it is. i wont defend drug cheating in sport or behaviour which someone in his position shouldnt be doing. the very elite in sports are looked up to by millions of kids around the world, how can someone like that be looked up to? he set a bad example and didnt give a toss either way.

and thats the problem with people, they like to forget "

is there a difference between Maradona being addicted to cocaine... and george best being addicted to alcohol?

"dont follow football, so only know him because of his cheating unfortunatly, a sad legacy, im sure he was a lovely guy

Clueless.

He was the second best player ever to have lived.

Not even top 10

Your top 10 please

Maybe not even my top 10, if I gave it some thought, but I'd rather see any of these ahead of Maradonna:

Eusebio

Pushkas

Best

Pele

Messi

Moore

Brady

Law

Stiles

Kane

Giggs

Owen

Charlton

And don't get me started on best ever world cup goal - Archie Gemmill all day long.

Ryan Giggs better than Maradona?

Please tell me you are on the wind up?

Nope. My nan's better than him, and she's been dead 30 years.

Best laught I’ve had for ages seeing giggs and Owen mentioned in the Same sentence as maradona

I was pissed as any English man at the hand of god goal. But marvelled later at him leaving a trail of embarrassment as he scored one of the best goals of all time. Regardless of opinions and who you support if you can't see that..... Then absolutely Ryan Giggs is the best player ever.... And I'm a united fan for my sins

"a dirty fucking cheat.

failed 2 drug tests at world cups.

remembered for cheating on the world stage with the 'hand of god' bollocks.

fired a rifle at reporters when he didnt like the questioning.

in one world cup final against germany he and his fellow teammates bullied and shoulder charged the ref when fouls were given against them.

as a manager players hated him and often had to be pulled away because they wanted to belt the bastard.

just because he is dead people shouldnt just conveniently forget what an asshole he was. only time he played well he was out of his brain doped up.

good riddance. btw we kicked your arse in the falklands fat boy

Once again a guy with he’s arse out on the tinternet knocking a bloke that had the life you could only dream about. And more talent in he’s little toe then your ever have . I’m sure he’s gutted you have a bad opinion of him up there laughing he’s bollocks off probably "

"Up There"? Fuck me if he gets in after all that & the rest when I arrive i'll kick the old guy off & get the big chair!!

Great player when his mind was on it, did wonders for Napoli. Great ball control, life control not so much..

"Drug taking cheat.

Doesn't matter how good your feet are, to be a legend, you have to be clean and play the game in the right spirit.

Plenty of football players have used drugs, but nothing is never said. George Best was an alcoholic, but do you treat him the say way as Maradona?

No player has drag his country to win a world cup or what he achieve with Napoli. People say hand of god, i say get over it. He was one of the best footballers i have seen in my lifetime.

People say hand of god, Scotland says legend!

Spot on though - his achievements were remarkable.. and when people asked maradona about Scotland his reply was who the f@@k are Scotland

Well no, actually his Argentinian managerial debut was against Scotland. Before the match he said:

"I am really happy to start my career as Argentina's manager in Scotland. The Scottish people love me because of the goals I scored against England...

I have great memories of Hampden. I played my first game for the national team there. We won 3-1 and I scored a goal. I have never forgotten it."

And he's right. We love him for it. GIRUY "

Is Scotland the land of Football ?? think not if so Celtic /Rangers would be playing in the Prem...or would they be good enough ??
