Sad news, was a talented player and probably the worlds best around 86, when, despite the infamous "Hand Of God" incident he pretty much single handedly won the World Cup for Argentina.

His life was blighted by controversy and drugs etc in a similar way to George Best but he was an undoubted talent and I consider myself lucky to have been there the night he pulled on a Spurs shirt and took to the pitch

I did have the pleasure of seeing him play live in a football league v the rest of the world at the old Wembley in 1987. It was less than a year since his infamous hand of god so every time he touched the ball he was getting booed by the crowd until after about 20 minutes he did one of the most deliberate handballs. The whole crowd shouted handball and he just shrugged his shoulders and smiled.

I have seen it, he was a god in Naples. What makes him the best is the fact he played for ordinary teams and made them winners, Messi & Ronaldo are great but even they haven’t done that

Agreed re the second goal - and the fact he then went on to replicate it pretty much in the semi-final against Belgium just made it even better.

Actually "everyone" talking about the Hand Of God goal should have the word "English" after everyone

both a magician and a flawed genius at the same time...

there are not many people you can say basically won a world cup single handedly for his country.... but he did in 86!

when you talk "players that come round once of a generation" he absolutely was one of them! I suppose you could say he was mine when i was a 11/12 yr old watching the mexico finals.....

Drug addiction is a disease worthy of our pity, not our scorn. Sad fact is that heart attacks are inevitable with extended use in later life.

I'll not forgive him for the hand of God incident, but that's not his legacy in the rest of the world. What an amazing talent he was.

Flawed genius. Top flight pro aged 15. What he did with Napoli is unbelievable and he is a true legend there even now.

He'll be remembered for cheating and all the drug abuse and ban but there's no doubting he was probably the most gifted footballer that's ever played the game.

Was he the best player that ever lived? Really don't think there will ever be a definitive answer to such a subjective question though - different times, different styles, different science and technology even all make it impossible to declare one player better over another.

What is undeniable though is he was *one of the* best players ever and certainly up there with Pele, Cruyff, Eusebio, Messi and others whose names always come to mind when thinking of the best players.

Doesn't matter how good your feet are, to be a legend, you have to be clean and play the game in the right spirit.

Plenty of football players have used drugs, but nothing is never said. George Best was an alcoholic, but do you treat him the say way as Maradona?

I think modern footballers probably cheat more than Maradona did. He's remembered as a cheat because he hand balled against England. If he'd been seen by the ref, he'd probably have shrugged his shoulders and smiled. I'm sure that players have done worse before and since.
