I have just been watching Simon Reeve, Cornwall.

I think we generally do a good job here in the UK but was shocked to see we rank 189th in the world on biodiversity.

Depending on how you define what is a country , there are only 200 to 250 countries in the world. So however you measure it we are at the very bottom.

Central

Obviously they have a specific rating system.

I don't think that we're that good tbh. We're a small, densely populated country. I think the HS2 planning approvals, where many ancient woods have been destroyed, says a lot about what is important to how we vote and have the country managed on our behalf.

We're too eager to rip anything out, destroying precious ecosystems that have evolved over centuries. Many smaller incremental changes have knocked things down too - much greater in total over the years than HS2.

We were also resistant to withdrawing the neo-nicotinoid insecticides that have been damaging to bees, amongst other wildlife, until pressured by EU regulations. That pesticide type lingers in the environment for years, builds up in concentration as each animal eats others etc.

A couple of very recent substantial negative impacts we've done or tried to continue doing.

We've also had many years of incredibly high pollution levels, such as air pollution. Despite legal action, we've not fixed those.

As I said, I don't know how we're rated on this but I'd not be comfortable pretending that we're world leading.

We were the first country in the industrial revolution and quite small in the scheme of things, plus a great deal of the forest was destroyed before that, just wondering how and from when it's measured.
