We don't have one. Never will.
Cant believe they try and convince people that a display unit can help them save money.
That idea only works if the amount shown scares you into turning stuff off.

I have British Gas smart meters and not had a problem with them.
What's the issue with them?
I used to work in the energy sector doing business to business gas and electric contracts |

Exactly, you either have to use the electricity or you don’t, no one leaves things running for fun. |

What doesn't work about it?
Had one fitted a couple of months back and had no problems. I had to put the display away as it was just annoying lighting up like a Christmas tree everytime I put the kettle on, bt it seems to work otherwise & reports my readings regularly to e-on. |

Unfortunately you will.
They are becoming compulsory as they send automatic meter readings to the energy supplier for accurate bills and not send someone to read it etc.
Some companies have started to roll them out |

I had one with my last supplier, but it doesn't work with my current supplier. However, the unit cost with the current supplier is cheaper than the previous supplier so I know whatever cost it's showing is actually higher than what it actually is. Will I get one with the current supplier.... Not a chance! |

So it's just the display hub not working rather than the meter itself?
It sounds like a problem with the hub Bluetooth technology that links it to the meter.
I'd get a replacement, they will send one out |

I've no desire to have one. I'm with a smaller energy company and they don't insist on it. The bigger companies seem to offer incentives to switch but the only benefit is i see to those companies as you're more inclined to stick with them. It wouldn't change my habits either. I use what energy I need to. I don't see how being able to see exactly what I'm using benefits me in the slightest. |

A few months ago I booked a appointment with E-ON for a smart meter however when the guy came to check he advised me against it saying the meters are 2-3 years old and my bill would probably end up going up I ended up staying on quarterly bill |

Nope. Not compulsory and you can't be forced to have one but in the future may affect what tariff you can opt for. Confirmed this with ofgem this year.
We already provide our own readings.

Ah but you don’t have to have one it’s voluntary not compulsory but your energy supplier will tell you it’s a requirement but they cannot make you.

"I had one with my last supplier, but it doesn't work with my current supplier. "
Yes, when smart meters were first launched, the energy companies in their wisdom all designed they own, rather than a universal one to be used by all companies.
This has delayed the full national roll out.
The plan was for every house to have a smart meter by 2018 but delays meant the roll out has only just started.
When you change supplier your current smart meter won't send readings to your new supplier.

Added complication with mine is I have solar panels, which my current supplier can't guarantee will be taken into account on the smart meters they are planning to roll out |

They are more cost effective for the supplier and should mean much easy to change supplier once roll out gets past a certain point.
On average a customer will use about 2% less, witch in real terms mean one less power station to build. Smart meters are the key to getting the best out of using renewable energy. |

Paying on a quarterly bill is the most expensive way to pay.
You are in effect getting 3 months gas + electric on credit, then paying.
It's a risk to the supplier due to people not paying and chasing payment which costs them.
The rates are higher as a result.
Monthly direct debit is cheaper as you get bigger discounts and more cheaper tariffs |

Because at present that's not the case. If it becomes an issue maybe we'll reconsider. But our usage is minimal. Solar panels on the roof linked to underfloor heating. Changing suppliers constantly to save £5 a year isn't something that appeals.

You used to be able to keep your feed in tariff with one supplier and have your general supply with another.
I'm not sure if you can still do that though. |

I usually change supplier regularly but I’m very happy with the supplier I’m now with and have no intention of switching. |

No probs. I'm not one of those paranoid muppefs that thinks I'm being spied on - bought an Alexa for the bedroom just so we can turn the light on/off without getting out of bed!
I just see them as a 'solution to a problem that doesn't exist for us (others will be different). When my mum had one put in it constantly gave inaccurate readings and scared the shit out of her. She spent weeks on the phone trying to get it taken away and worrying how much the bill would be. The claims that they save money don't help but they're well documented as causing anxiety especially in the elderly.

That's a good point.
Maybes I was blinkered in my view because I've not heard bad reports and mine works perfectly.
Must be a nightmare when it goes wrong.
I hope your mum got it sorted |
