I don't know but am mostly inclined to think it's just a spin-off invention of religion.
We know that a person's personality, their attitudes, habits etc are all brain based. When the brain is altered, it affects the person that's experienced by them. The full aspect of what makes us ourselves has no evidence that there's something else needed, the soul.
We're an animal, the product of millions of years of evolution, sharing our earlier path with all other life. It's been random - random genetic mutations, that have allowed life to flourish. Not some magical, invisible thing we've no evidence of.
Follow the evidence. Don't be led by religions that helped to enslave our ancestors, giving them a touch of comfort that their hard lives serving others were made acceptable by having a spirit, or something, that continued after they died in some fanciful paradise, if they behaved their masters rules and paid their dues.
