Singer/band.

I’ll start you off with Tracy Chapman.

Awesome voice, songs you can relate too, sounds so good.

Redditch

Probably the most famous example would be Nick Drake

If you heard a lot of his stuff for the first time now, you'd think he was a new artist rather than someone who recorded in the late 60s, early 70s

"Prefab Sprout. Great lyrics."

Great shout! Still listen to them every now and then. The intro to Scarlett night, one of the best ever.

He’s not too well.

Steve McQueen is one of the best albums ever made and yet very few people know it

Know I'm biased but Madness - biggest selling singles band of the 80s, yet never won a Brit, barely ever critically recognised and yet just about everyone knows their hits - but many don't look beyond those singles and funny videos to see what great albums they released with some very clever lyrics covering a range of very relevant topics

Strange, Prefab Sprout and Scritti Polliti had lots of critical acclaim at the time, never understood why.

My vote goes for Talk Talk. Written off as synth pop and then went madly experimental.

Curiosity Killed The Cat.

I still play their album Keep Your Distance quite often

I wholeheartedly endorse both of these sentences. Would have gone for Talk Talk myself.

Joan Armatrading, some great music about diverse subjects that she often sung about before they became popular subjects.

Good shout. I will throw Steve Marriott into the mix. Had a voice like no other.

Strangely I'd personally have said Talk Talk were more commercially successful and recognisable than either Prefab or Scritti - all three were good bands though
