Mine is Roman Holiday.
I fell in love with Rome after watching this film, and went there for my honeymoon.
Sadly the magical romanticism in the film could not be replicated.
Perhaps I was too stressed to enjoy it so soon after the wedding; or the numerous renovation works in the city during our stay in readiness for 2000 spoiled some of the scenery; or I was with the wrong person, as we divorced 7 years later.
However, the film never fails to make me feel all soft and gooey.
One of my guilty pleasures for certain, especially the handsome and dashing Gregory Peck!

I quite enjoy a bit of tragedy in me romances, so for me it's 'The English Patient' and 'Wuthering Heights'
Do they count? ...or is 'Romance' more light hearted?
I like the passionate stuff |

mainstream?
Boys on the side!
bittersweet but darkly humorous with lots of touching moments and a superb cast!

Laurence Olivier was brooding yet dashing in the 1939 version of Wuthering Heights.

"Ewoks appear in ROTJ, not SW, I think.
It's the same franchise! I'm too tired and emotional to be pedantic x"
.
Different films to be precise, not pedantic. |

Edward scissorhands (makes me cry everytime)
Not romantic films as such but do have a love story central to the plot Terminator
Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) |

that was going to me my choice along with the notebook and the timetravellers wife "
Only seen a little bit of the notebook (complete with subtitles at work!) And not seen the time travellers wife, but I love love love ps I love you. In fact anything with Mr butler in makes me slightly emotional! |

Even better example of a 'romantic' film: The Princess Bride |

"Don't really do soppy movies or chick flicks yawn prefer action ora good thriller"
I'm with you there, however, Sunday afternoons, mile high pile of ironing, nothing better to while away the hours than a soppy or family film.
If I had to choose - Corina, Corina! |

I'm not much of a one for soppy films, much prefer to see some muscled action hero strafing the forest or the street with his huge weapon
But if I notice either of the following films when channel surfing then I can't stop myself from watching them...(plus the sexy Alan Rickman is in both so that's a bonus)
Love, Actually

We did it the other way round - I took Perky to Rome in Dec 10 for our first break abroad and she fell in love with IT! (Bloody Romans - what have they done for us???????). When we cam back we bought the restored version of Roman Holiday and spent Xmas Day spotting all the sites and sights we had seen and been to. Everybody say 'Ahhhhhhh......'
As for My favourite film - How's this for 'high-brow'????
HEIMAT. (Dir. Edgar Reitz) A German language film from 1986 following the life of a Germany family from 1919 to 1984. It is that good that Speilberg nicked ideas from it for Schindlers List (most notably the little girl in the red coat....). Watched it at the NFT when it came out, in a marathon 18 hour session (the film is 16hrs long). |

yes i remember that tho i could have sworn it was originally released as a series, and that Shoa at 9 1/2 hours was the longest film released (maybe its just the longest documentary) but im probably wrong, both were brilliant and powerful, I forced myself to watch shoah , kept a stash of food drink n so i had no excuse to miss a minute, and came away emotionaly numb (9 1/2 hours about the holocaust with no archive footage will do that)
Heimat is more upbeat in that it shows germanys rebuilding after the war and the resiliance of family. |
