Would you expect a washing machine to last nowadays?

I'd hoped for a bit longer than 5 years

I’d say five years is about average for modern machines.

5 years is a long time for a machine that has so many active parts. I'd say its about right.

The days of us having a machine on the go for 20 years are sadly gone.

They don't build anything to last these days.

Depends how much it's used I guess, the brand, etc. But you'd hope for over the five year mark you've had.

It did a lot of banging then it stopped dead. The drum is sort of lopsided and we have euthanised it in a humane fashion after retrieving the wringing wet clothes. It had to be jeans!

There's not much Mr N can't fix but even he has had to admit defeat on this one. It could be rebuilt, at a cost of roughly three new machines.

We bought the cheapest we could find (a beko) when we got our bought our first place. It’s still going 10 years on even in a hard water area and without Calgon (other sodium hexametaphosphate additives are available).

I'd say it should last 15 years - if it's a decent make.

Some cheap makes use cheaper components and therefore may not last so long.

5 -10 years if you maintain it properly. The killer of any washing machine is hard water and the build-up around the heating elements. Try to descale it every couple of weeks and also clean any moulds

I'd assume 10 years plus. I expect that most investments like these would be 10 - 15 years and possibly longer. I certainly don't like to change things by fashion and that manufacturers should be making these to be durable and very long lived. We should only need a tiny number of these in our lifetimes. There may be very occasional major technological breakthroughs but with old established technology, the expertise is there to make them substantially durable.

Oh the memories of my Granny pre-scrubbing socks and shirt collars with a nail brush and hard soap. She didn't believe the machine could possibly do a good enough job

When I was in India I had to ask the girl who did my washing not to slap my tee shirts so hard on the stone she used for the washing. They were wearing out too fast . She didn't half get them clean though.

My Granny only believed housework was done properly if it involved physical effort. She made her own cleaning solution rather than buy it, she ironed EVERYTHING, she had an ancient Hoover that required muscles like Popeye to move and she pre washed most of what went in the washing machine

Yeah my mum was the same when she was still able to do that kind of stuff. Apparently tea towels only dry up properly if they've been ironed. Who knew!

I miss wash days (Mondays). I miss my Granny - she'd have loved our little girl "

AWW.

"The days of us having a machine on the go for 20 years are sadly gone.

They don't build anything to last these days. "

That is so true, even something as simple as a loo seat won't sit still after a few months. Yet the old fashioned black ones, sometimes horseshoe shaped won't let you down.

Why is this? The accountants have taken over the world an have sacked the engineers.

Wooden loo seats lasted a life time

I must say that with many things, they do seem designed to self destruct after the warranty. My last mobile phone was a good example, stopped recognising the SIM almost exactly 3yrs after I got it and when the contract ran out

When I moved into this flat 7 years ago, I bought a 2nd, probably 4th or 5th hand one off someone else who was moving out. Paid £30 for it and it only gave up the ghost about 6 months ago. Bought a reconditioned Hoover washer/drier for £130 with a 2 year guarantee

A lot less than years ago! I had a machine for 20 years, I've had 2 within 6 years now!

"YouTube is great for that type of thing... I repaired my oven using a video and a few simple tools a while back.

Even the great tube of you can't resurrect this. The drum has come loose and the bearings have gone. Normally we turn to the Internet for everything though.

Unfortunately the days of replacing the bearings in washing machines are long gone... sealed drum units nowadays that cost as much as a new machine.

Curse you planned obsolescence!"

I was fixing those things in 1996 and a new bearing swap cost £80 for a machine out of Peterborough,Hotpoint/Indesit/Candy etc.

That's the way to go I think. Up until about 15 years ago electrical goods lasted a long time. We had second hand washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc that just seemed to go on for years.

Our first washing machine in our little flat came from my stepdad's dad's house. It was probably 20yrs old or more when we inherited it and it lasted from 2005-2009 and it was only the door that wouldn't shut properly. No parts available for such an old machine though, otherwise the actual mechanism was fine.

This one of ours that's just gone bang has got a sealed unit inside and the panel at the back is so small it would be difficult to work on. It's designed to be throw away, which is wrong.

The funny (not funny) thing is last Saturday the vacuum went bang too. Mind you that was a good 15 years old. It didn't die from over use

I was in school when my mum bought her washing machine. It's had a couple of repairs like new pumps and things and it's still going strong. They don't make them like that anymore.

Obviously living alone and not working any more, I don't have to use it as much as when I worked on site and ma ex had to have clean clothes on everyday as a carer. I just run some descaler through it and make sure that the filters are clean and the job's a good un

You can’t go wrong with German

I have a AEG tumble dryer 10 years old.

Still works like the day I bought it.

Miele, you pay the price for the quality mind. You tube is alright for repair instructions; lots of manufacturer's hand books and repair manuals are available online, which will detail safety precautions.

shits creek

I totally thought the question was gonna be ...

A piece of string?

Wank as it is most only last a few years now, so about a month after the warranty is up.

Sods law and keeps the money rolling in for the manufacturers.
