Ouch! Covid has been around knowingly for a long number of years and there are strains that live in cats and dogs already but a new strain is not a good thing |

It's a mutated form that can spread to humans. Spain and Netherlands have also culled mink because of covid.

To be honest mink are culled in many countries including the UK due to their effect on the indigenous wildlife. Here in Cornwall in the last decade their have been several contracts, some put up by the RSPB on there reserves. Its not uncommon just suddenly in the news, covid link or not. And no Im not a crackpot, my work is woodland management. |

They still are cleaning up after 6000 were released in the forest in 98, they killed thousands of ground nesting birds |

"Mink are terrible animals. they kill everything. Some were released by intruders a few years ago and they devasted the wild life around........"
Same thing happened around here years ago. The animal rights protesters let them all out and it devastated the local wildlife. |

"17 million it just said on the news how the heck can you kill that many? Seems an uphill task "
They use gas to kill them.
To the poster above who asked why such a destructive animal is farmed? For fur. You know the trims on costs, bobbles on hats etc? Lots that say faux fur aren't faux at all.
This should be the incentive to cease fur farming forever. We don't need fur clothes in the 21st century. |

Not meaning to get technical, but I will.
Murder
Noun: the killing of another human being under conditions specified under law
Verb: the act of committing a murder
This is a cull of a non-indigenous species, which happens quite often in various non-indigenous species in many countries |

You know they get killed anyway?"

"How is it passed from Mink to human? Surely the danish don’t eat them after skinning them? "
People who work with them will get mink bodily secretions on themselves and have itched their nose or put their mucky fingers near their eye. The usual. Poor hand hygiene, self inoculation. |

Apparently the infected mink develop coughs so the particles are airborne.. it's interesting that it could become a pet apocalypse.. maybe they will find a vaccine for pets but if it really really got out of hand then I fear what might happen to pets... |

If the mink have to be slaughtered because there may be a slim chance that they may spread covid then I can see no way that pets could be spare. If they were would it not make a mockery of the lock down rules and all the hardships that it has inflicted on the populous? |

If it's proven then this government will slaughter all pets.. of course there will be exceptions.. corgis, hunting hounds, gundogs and the like..
I think it's more prevalent in cats than dogs.. |

"If it jumps to our pets will we cull them?
At the beginning of the pandemic a lot of owners put their animals to sleep, in case they gave the virus to the family." Not sure how true that is? Most pet owners think more of their pets then they do of their fellow humans. |

Yes, in bats.
An excerpt from The Lancet (but cannot link without being banned)
"The story of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a case in point. A paper published in July, 2020, traced the origins of SARS-CoV-2. The researchers concluded that it came from a virus with relatively generalist properties circulating in horseshoe bats. “Everything points to a bat sarbecovirus reservoir; we are very confident about this”, said David Robertson, head of bioinformatics at the Medical Research Council–University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, Scotland, UK, and co-author of the paper. The evolutionary analysis suggested that the lineage from which SARS-CoV-2 emerged has been present in bats for several decades."

I saw a documentary about that a couple of years ago.
They tested loads of faux fur and found it was infact real fur but the customers did not know this. Ever since I saw that I won't buy anything with faux Fur. |

I refuse to buy anything with so called faux fur. I think anything fur related looks naff, it being faux still encourages the real thing to exist as a "luxury" and it's impossible for the untrained to tell the difference. Lots of the pom-poms on kids winter hats etc have been found to be rabbit or other types of fur. |

I never really had that much to begin with but maybe a coat with a faux fair trim on the hood but yes I saw that and also a few years ago when those bag pompoms were really popular a lot of those were found to be real fur. |
