I've seen plenty of people saying they check the profile before reading the message and just delete if they don't like what they see, so taking the time on a message 'could' be wasted, where a simple wink to get attention might have done the job.
It's tricky though as it's also less personal and someone could just be winking everyone.
I'm a bit crap at small talk and if their profile is a little lacking in info, I find it easier to wink and leave the sending of an opening message to those that have something to talk about, or posted something interesting on the forum or status.
The wink is just one tool in our kit and can be useful, but also shouldn't be relied upon. |
