I have heard that if you call someone and you both use viber the call is free, including international calls.

Sounds too good to be true but if it is what's the catch?

No catch as long as you don't get stung for roaming charges, stick to wifi abroad

Also use what's app for picture messaging

Yup, true.

Call our young'un in Canada every day, perfectly free.

Signal varies cos of Internet thingy, but seems to be better than Skype.
