What makes you buy a book?

The cover, the title, do you take chances on unknown authors, do you search for a particular subject you want information on and see what’s about?
Also what would you call a book that was a non fiction, dating guide/self help/navigational tool?
Yeah struggling how to come up with a title, it’s gotta be shit hot and catchy.

I often buy books by new authors, a good cover can help but is never why I buy a book.
I'm a member of loads of book groups on Facebook and Twitter and the buzz around a new release, positive reviews etc are why I buy. |

If its authors I know then I never really look at the cover.
It really does depend on my mood as to what grabs my attention and if im looking online or on the rare occasion in a bookshop, I tend to like dark covers with a mix of different colours/textures.
And a cool font for the title which matches the theme of the book.
But i also find in the last couple years I do rely heavily on recommendations from friends/family. So havent even chosen a book based on the cover just bought it on there recommendations alone. |

If you haven’t got a publishing or distribution deal you are self publishing and it’s crowded so you have to have a big online following. Have a look at danger and play he built up a big following online before it was banned and then self published through amazon |

Something that’s visibly attractive and well formatted as well as sounds interesting. Obviously I read the blurb which has to peak ones interest, but also when I flick through the pages and see all the pictures to colour in, that’s what seals the deal for me.  |

The cover visuals are eye candy.
The Title has to grab the minds curiosity.
The sub title to deepen that curiosity to investigate this book more.
The rear cover with description and reviews help a lot too. |

I'm a big fan of judging a book by its cover. That us, after all, what they are for.
I have two methods of choosing books to read:
1. Go to a bookshop or library, head to a section I'm interested in (rarely fiction), browse through what's available and see if anything leaps out at me.
2. Identify something specific I want to read about, research what the best titles on the subject are and then buy one of them second hand from Abe Books.
Suggested title for your book, OP:
Annie Wilkes Investigates.

Honestly it depends.
If it's an author or a famous person that I already like - for example, I bought Chris & Rosie Ramsey's book last week, got the newest book by an author I enjoy on my Kindle as soon as it was published this morning, pre-ordered a book by my favourite wrestlers too - then I will be more likely to snap it up.
Kindle - I often browse the deals to see what catches my eye.

By recommendation although that can be a mine field because some of the great works like 'beyond good and evil' by Frederick Nietzsche is so complex a mere mortal like me troubles to follow it. The guy had an IQ of 260! |

Title and Cover initially attracts me if I’m not looking for a recommendation from one of my wise friends.
Then I’ll read the propaganda type stuff on the back and the inside cover.

This ^ plus if it’s an author I’m not familiar with I’ll open the book randomly, read two pages to see if it catches my imagination and I like their writing style. |

Can’t use my username on here. It’s probably covered by all kinds of copyright laws, especially as it’s a book. Mr King wouldn’t appreciate it.
Same as Ruth Langford wasn’t allowed to have RL on her jeans because Ralph Lauren wouldn’t allow it. |

The last book I bought was recommended on 'Between the Covers'. That's not enough to make me buy as a rule but it was recommended highly by people I regard highly in one way or another.
The cover wouldn't make me buy it.
The author is unheard of to me although he has other best sellers and is lauded highly by well known readers.
The blurb conjures up an intriguing life's quandry that leaves the reader wanting to know how the story pans out.
I'm almost at the end simply because I want to know the outcome.
It was well written but the genre is not for me and I won't buy another of his books but at least I've heard of him.
The book I read before that was given to me and not of a genre I like but it was a great read and I passed it on.
The book I had delivered today was ordered some months ago and was bought as it about a deadly virus and the world going into lockdown.... what a prediction!
I am on the third book of Yuval Noah Harari ...... obvs I read his first so bought the second and now the third because he is a highly educated , insightful and visionary writer.
Who will the target audience be for your book ? |

Anyone that’s looking to date really so late teens and all the way up.
Editing is going to be a problem because it’s £1 per 1 thousand words and it’s going to be around 80 thousand words or more.
At the moment I’m writing how I would talk and you’ve seen how I converse on here over the years. I’m quite vulgar.

New I'd pick something in my areas of interest or off the back of a recommendation.
2nd hand I'd go for a book that looks like it's been read a fair bit and take a chance with the content.
Bookcrossing too but I'm not sure it's still a thing |

I buy new authors, but read the back to get an inkling of what its about. Then I open at a random page and read, if I get on with the writing style, I'll buy it.
When I find an author I like, I'll buy all their books, but happy to be swayed by other authors, but rarely genres in fiction. |

I'd be a liar not to say the cover, that's how I got into the 'Sharpe' series. These days it can many things - recommendations from friends/family, or it can be about something that I'm interested in or I want to see what a new author is like. |

The pictures, seriously.
And not excluding diagrams. I've always enjoyed picture books and books full of technical diagrams. I'm dyslexic. I'm no dummy and can read. Its just reading I find tiering and it just puts me off reading pages and pages of text. But picture books, social history, engineering, architecture, railways I'm completely in book heaven. They say a picture paints a 1000 words and it really does for me . I find pictures far more interesting and fulfilling than words. I love analysing them, picking out all that is going on. All my pized books are picture books.

I stood staring at books the other day, no idea what I was looking to read, I don’t go by author so would say the cover and the title draws me in l, then I read the back and inside cover for insight into the book. With not knowing you or what your life experiences are when I read your post I thought the title Reality Bites but googled it to see if already out there and there’s a movie, then thought Insider Secrets but googled that and there’s a book so give in lol |
