"Ardent atheists here but Jerusalem is a bit of a banger. "
'And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?'
Always a classic |

Used to love “from the tiny ant, to the elephant”
Used to raise the roof when that one was chosen! Occasionally as students we would get to request a hymn and there was an unwritten rule that you choose this one. Tune. |

I do not even know the tunes though. They all sound gloomy to me. I think Led Zeppelin songs should be sung in church. |

"Down to the River to Pray by Alison Krauss is is my choice.
It’s a folk hymn "
Also on the 'Oh brother where art thou?' soundtrack (which is an exceptional album) |

It is. Coincidentally, the first time I watched that film I was on a coach travelling across America. It made the film even better. |

We had to sing at Assembly every morning at primary and junior school and I quite liked the hymns.
Favourites were probably
The Lord is my Shepherd and Dare to be a Daniel.
I don't think you have to be religious to appreciate a good tune.

"In the Bleak Mid-winter
Damn it now I’m singing it
Sorry - it's one of my favourites at Christmas and if it helps I did start singing in my head too "
I know it reminds me of being in the school choir at Christmas |

I’m not a Christian but lots Christmas hymns have musical roots in English folk music. I love the Holly and the Ivy. Kate Rusby does a song called “sweet bells” and that’s my Christmas tree music.

On a similar "I'm not a Christian" theme, Tim Minchin White Wine in the Sun is rather lovely |

"Little donkey ??
That’s a carol innit? Love that though no idea lol. Wots diffrence between a hymn and a Carol there just religious tunes to me "
A carol is for festive occasions and may or may not be religious.
A hymn is always religious and is for adoration. |

"Not a hymn but a Christmas Carol..Silent night (just not when I sing it)
I quite like the German version 'Stille Nacht'
I saw a bio about the German guy who wrote it "
I saw a programme where he was mentioned - might have been one of Portillo's European Railway Journeys |

I wonder if this song would have been a hymn if written in the 1600s instead of 1967...
Written by Bob Thiele and George Weiss
(sung 1968 by Louis Armstrong)
"What a wonderful world" |

"Amazing grace
Abide with me
To be a pilgrim
Onward christian soldiers
we plough the fields and scatter
Dislike
All things bright and beautiful
"
Those were the regulars at my primary school.
Onward christian soldiers was hymn number 66 in the green hymn books. How the hell can I remember that?!

I remember there being a huge wave of excitement at my little C of E primary school when a we had a new hymn book issued with ‘modern’ hymns in. There was one abomination with mention of refuelling jets in. |
