The reason I ask is I sent a message to a person complimenting them on a story. Now I cannot see the story or any trace of their profile

They may have left the site (although story would still be available).

The story may have been removed for violating site rules, and them too.

They may have asked for story to be removed and they happened to have blocked you.

If someone leaves the site all messages go along with their profile. Their forum posts remain unless they've broken forum rules and have been removed by a mod.
