The best horror film to watch
Jump to: Newest in thread
So people let’s have your suggestions for the best horror film to watch and reason why??
For me hardly any horror film scares me. However there is one film I can’t watch as scares the hell out of me and sends shivers up my back.
It’s
Arachnophobia
Reason is I do suffer from it. |

Depends what you class as scary. Horror is the same as comedy- it’s all subjective and your response will be determined by what’s going on in your own head. Personally I don’t find jump scares scary at all, but I know people who can’t deal with them. For me, it’s psychological-horror that gets me the most, like The Shining. Some body-horror freaks me out too like The Thing.
If you don’t like spiders, watch The Mist (the film, not the show). There’s a scene in that which made my skin crawl |

I'm not into gore so these recommendations are more based on psychological horror.
Event Horizon, science fiction horror, very nightmarish.
The Witch, 17th century New England.
The Shining, art house horror.

You may think of them as such but they are really not. Evil Dead 2 yeah I will give you that as comedy horror.
If you think the Thing is comedy horror then so is the The Fly with Jeff Goldblum |

Don't think horror movies are scary any more watching back movies from the 80s that scared me shitless actually now make me laugh.
Guess over time you get desensitized. Mad how the exorcist initially was banned for nearly 20 years.... |

Watched The Exorcist the other week. Not taking anything away from it as great film, but while it was creepy I didn't find it scary.
Given the hype around it when it was first released I was hoping for more. Maybe I'm just too jaded |

Alien and The Thing for sci-fi body horror.
The Mist
It (part one...part two was disappointing).
28 days later.
Or if you like horror-comedy, Shaun of the Dead, The Cabin in the Woods, Evil dead 2 (or Ash vs Evil dead the series) |

"Some of these are timid and not what I call scary at all
I’ve yet to see a horror film that scares the shit out of me
I’d like to see one where you don’t know what’s coming next"
I can agree with you on this. |

Stephen King is a great horror writer and all the film adaptations from his books are good.
The mist has a great soundtrack which I have got on iPlayer and the timeless classic of the exorcist is great to play.
For me I enjoy the saw films as some of those traps you would not want to be in |

One Halloween, at midnight and in a old house all on my own, the Ring (the original Japanese version as this was before the remake) was being aired on TV and I had the great idea to stay up and watch it.
That was a mistake |

My older sisters (6 & 8 yrs respectively) sat me infront of horrors on an almost weekly basis from 7-13 yrs old. They were 15 and 18's. I was 25 before I could walk upstairs without the lights on!!!!(lol)
The one that really got me, but will probably be a little dated now , was..... Salem's Lot (not the remake). |

The little child still taps at your window "
That and the final scene trying to stake the lead vampire as the others pushed to get out of an adjacent room......goosebumps |

These are my favourites. Typically Brit flicks.
Elephant: a thriller about a hit man, who talks as much as the STIG.
Xtro: very spooky, think Omen era London and Alien special effects.
Left hand Drive: a short film about an arrogant yuppie in a Beemer, in a multi-story car park.
(I'm still looking for this one)
Doodlebug: another short film and it's about a bloke in a cell with a cockroach??? Or is it?
Blair witch project is not the only low tech horror film out there.

Salems Lot (The old version) Can't bear to look at a rocking chair even now and if someone whispers "Teacher" in my ear, which everyone does because my friends and family know of my fear of it - I feel dizzy with fear!

Salems lot is great, the late James Mason is brilliant and really adds to the pathos of the story. And who can forget Mr Barlow, wow, jumped off my seat when I laid eyes on him. Another great is the devil rides out,and the others is very good. The exorcist is brilliant, love the beginning scene in Iraq. The original omen is great and the witch is excellent. Love a good horror film. |

"Suspiria
Don’t Look Now
Rosemarys Baby
Cannibal Holocaust
The House by the Cemetery
The Devils
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
"
I think I find the cinematography quite emotionally moving in Texas chainsaw massacre, God knows why, but I do. |

I agree Jenny Agutter was naughty, but not so much in the Railway Children |

Someone has already commented but scares are personal, just like comedy not everyone finds Adam Sandler funny but plenty do. So what you’d laugh at or hide behind the sofa whilst watching is down to you.
I watched Halloween last night, seen it a few times over the years, did it scare me. No chance, no film scares me....until.
I watched a film that some on here will think is shit or boring, however due to personal reasons it really got me when I first watched it. I was actually on the edge of my seat, telling myself ‘it’s only a film’
Blair Witch Project as I say, it’s personal |

The 1992 Dracula is good, Gary Oldman bought a new angle to the story. I used to like the TV show hammer house of horror, great show, and tales of the unexpected. |

Kill List is brilliant - albeit it has a touch of the Wicker Man about it. The hitmen are ahem interesting characters
A film I quite liked was Mother! Makes you feel very anxious watching it and you won't know what's going on until you get it, then it all makes perfect sense.
If you're looking for something lighter then I nominate a British 80's classic - The Monster Club. Watched this many a time growing up. |
