Following a post on another thread...........
Is there any point in having a serious conversation/forum post, when people can jump in and dismiss your argument with a word and then turn to attacking you personaly (is that not trolling?).
Do people take any notice of these attacks?
Should people be allowed to make them?
Should people be less sensitive and 'select' their reading of responses?
Discuss......... |

I know it's easier said than done, but just ignore them. Some people get off on causing mayhem.
I've noticed a rise in intolerance to the _iews of others. Twice today I've commented on threads only for my profile to be picked on. I wasn't asking people to look at my pics or my interests.
Leave them to show themselves up. |

"I find some of them quite shocking but it serves to tell you something about the antagonists."
Well we for one are 'outspoken' and 'a little to forceful' in expressing our opinions sometimes (hence 2 forum bans), but we stand by our opinions and never personally attack others who post. We respect their _iews, but its all about wording when replying. We are making a concerted effort to 'tame down' our opinions as there are certain members who will try to provoke others to get them banned or at least get a hostile reaction. Some members belittle others to get additional members to take sides....its life, like being back in a school playground really sometimes.
But, we like posting and some topics are great fun, others serious and intellectual, we recognize we can be a little head-strong but hey, whats the point of having an opinion if your not allowed to express it, albeit without personally attacking other members?
A fine line between heated debate and hurling insults. |

a line nevertheless and one which any decent minded people recognise and respect. |

It reaffirms how happy I am being me that I don't do it.
However, I have no control over how someone else interrupts my words, as along I am comfortable with my intent when scripting them. |

was that purposeful irony?
"interrupts", instead of interprets? |

Personal attacks don't phase me.
Other than a lucky one or two (or unlucky, if you want to look at it that way), no one on here knows the real me.
They can only attack my postings and their interpretations of me.
Attacking my profile and forum persona is not really the same as attacking me, if that makes sense. |

Some people do it because they've worked out what it takes to bait other users. Personally, if they try it with me then they've mistaken me for someone who gives a fuck. I do enjoy the political threads though, and there are some forumites who I am diametrically opposed to politically and we banged heads on many occasions before I got to know them (relatively speaking) on the non-political threads, yet I've had ended up having a good laugh with them, which in turn leads to us actually debating on the political threads later rather than 'blah blah blah you're wrong dickhead'.
It's ok to have a different _iew on a given subject but it's not ok to be intolerant of others who have that same right. |

Nothing wrong with trolling, it is the lifeblood of any forum.
It's just unfortunate most trolls on here are using a very blunt instrument to do their trolling.*

Personal insults are the debating tools of those who lack the intellect to justify their argument.
That type of person is not attacking you because of your flaws, they are lashing out because of their own insecurities and shortcomings.
Never respond in kind and stay focussed on the debate. When they realise their 'insult card' didn't work, they normally disappear because they rarely have anything else to offer. |

I myself have had some personal attacks for daring to voice my own opinion in these forums from certain members of the clique but i have learnt to just rise above it and bite my lip and with that insult i want to hurl at them but just ignore and carry on putting my point across in the best way i can. These people think they are clever and are eged on by other members but i tend to just leave those threads at that point and leave them to argue amongst themselves |

For what it is worth there are several comments on this thread that , to me , ARE trolling whilst accusing others of it.
Speaking of cliques, stating opinions as if they are truth and can be substantiated.
Why do people think they are entitled to voice opinions and yet slate anyone else who voices an opinion? Especially if it differs from theirs.
Oh to be a powerless , innocent victim like the nice people. |

"Is there a noun for the type of person that charges others with their own actions ? Yeah.......Twats........"
I was thinking hypocrite George.... but it was a little tame. Twat is too broad an umbrella. Something specific will come to me soon.... |

Yeh thats true but then the lickers who aim to gain a bit of acceptance by yawning, saying not another of this sort of thread or calling the starter a child in the vein hope others like their sarcasm and possibly get them a bit of sympathy gash would get depressed. |

Another aspect to this may be, that statistically people will be on here with some form of mental illness either diagnosed or undiagnosed. It doesn't mean madness or psychopathic behaviors ,but depression or loads of different conditions which are temporary and eventually go away either with or without treatment.
Mind gave out the 1 in 4 statistic recently where.1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any given year.
This is the most commonly quoted statistic, and the one which has the most research evidence to support it.
If it is in fact the case and you carry those figures through to swinging and then the site and the forums,it could account for some of the periods where people "don't quite seem themselves".
In fact we may make judgements about people when they are in the middle of such an episode or have joined the forums during a period like this in there lives.
Over the years i have seen loads of aggressive behavior on here from individuals, who then went on to become
valued model posters who contribute lots and are supportive to other members. Maybe we ought to cut people some slack sometimes

"to be honest i think there is a lot of insecure people on here it comes out in threads and they seek approval" So, if this is the case - what should other posters do? Put them in their place? Go with the flow? Try and boost their self esteem?
I'm curious - personally I would not ever deliberately make anybody feel bad or small, just not in my nature. |

I think it's always better to do something constructive, than something destructive. After all it takes forever to make something, and seconds to wreck it. You can apply that to whatever you like in this world.

I menat really if I sense somebody feels a little insecure about something, I would be inclined to be benevolent. Thats all |
