So they are going to spend hours if not weeks debating something that needs no intervention as putting veggie in the description of a burger, sausage ect sort of describes what it is

Not a problem. They can be called Veggie Sticks, Veggie Patties, Veggie Bakes. Where there's a will there's a way

I got slated last time I said that I couldn't understand why vegetarians would want to eat something that looked like regular burger and sausages...all about having options apparently. If I didn't eat meat I wouldn't eat something that looked lik

I was shopping in Sainsbury and saw the phrases 'Meat Free Duck' and 'Vegetarian Chicken' no it is neither Duck or Chicken. Why on earth would vegetarians want eat it. It is misleading

I know plenty of vegetarians and vegans who did it for ethical reasons and miss the flavours and textures of meat.

I’m not veggie / vegan but as a mum I like the fact they are called chicken Kiev, sausages, etc. It’s a great way to get a kid trying other foods without realising what they are eating. Some have been a hit and become a stable alternative, some not so much.

Because a lot of vegetarians/vegans choose to be so for ethical reasons. They still like the taste of meat but can't abide the inherent cruelty that goes with its production.

Having a product that allows them to virtually swap like for like makes it easier to keep to their chosen diet and gives them more variety of meal options.

What's misleading about describing something as having the flavour of duck or chicken but not being meat, and having to harm the animal to enjoy the experience?

No, clearly you don't "get it", or understand why vegans and vegetarians choose to abandon meat and (in the case of vegans) dairy produce.

It's not about abandoning the taste, flavours or textures of the animal derived produce, but abandoning the practice that is cruel to animals and the environment, while not being great for our health.

Education is your key to understanding.

I think that's part of it. Why do vegetarians/ vegans want to do certain things.

The other thing is... Really why does it matter? As an omnivore the meat is still in the meat section being meat and I can still eat and buy it. It's a bit like gluten free alternatives. "That's not for me". Fine.

Well yes I do, or else I wouldn't of posted. I know the reasoning and as far as I am concerned if I forgo meat then I also forgo the taste of it. I didn't post to have my opinion challenged.

"Don't question my education, maybe you need to step back and not be so judgemental"

My comment wasn't about your general education or standard of education, but about educating yourself as to why a person chooses to become vegetarian or vegan. If you took the time to educate yourself to the myriad of reasons why, then you would understand. So if anyone is being judgemental here, I assure you it is not me.

I am a vegan, and made the switch for three key reasons... animal welfare, environmental protection, and personal health benefits. At no point did I choose to go vegan because I didn't like the taste, flavour or texture of the food products I was abandoning. There are many products I can have that provide the same taste sensation as the animal product it's replacing without requiring an animal to die for me to have that enjoyment.

You know, like how a rampant rabbit doesn't contain rabbit, but still gets you off?

On a side note, if you decide you don't want your opinions challenged when aired on a public forum (clue is in the name), it's probably best not to post. In the spirit of open and friendly debate here, we get out opinions challenged... you might learn from other peoples opinions, and they might learn from yours.

You can have a pastie, but only Cornish pasties are made in Cornwall. Stilton cheese can only be made in Stilton, etc...

We maybe able to grow grapes in Kent, but Champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France.

A few years back there was a big argument about chocolate, as the chocolate confectionary we devour in this country doesn't contain enough of the essential ingredients to be considered "chocolate".

On a more serious note, food labelling is actually quite an important topic, especially if you have an medical, ethical or religious reasons to avoid specific product or ingredient.

Right? Let's not insult our intelligence.

Veggie burger in the meat free alternatives section with a picture of a plant not a cow on it. Ingredients list. Vegetarian/vegan on the front.

About three steps away you'll find stuff with pictures of cows.

Clues... maybe.

Lawsuits lead to labels.

But I see a pattern here. Coffee may be hot. Knives may be sharp. Veggie burger may contain vegetables.

Problem solved!

May not contain meet, but with processed food may not be strictly vegetarian either, and a whole heap of vegetarian food isn't vegan.

Same goes with drinks. Diet Pepsi isn't vegan (fish gelatine) but Pepsi Max is.

Clear labelling is essential.

And there we get to the crux of it - the compensation culture that we find ourselves living in means that companies will always do what they deem necessary to avoid being sued.

In this case it appears to be meat/dairy lobbies wanting exclusivity in terms, rather than compensation culture.

It's a shame companies have to be sued to not harm people in so many cases. Or (McDonald's hot coffee case) they spend so much money trying to rewrite the narrative into greedy lady got a boo boo rather than negligent policies leading to severe injury (in a country where those injuries are paid personally out of pocket and so awards must be higher).

I think there's a few meanings of normal being mixed up.

Average, typical.

Within a group, acceptable, not weird.

Here it might be read as "we have this history therefore those who don't follow it are weird".

I'm not here for that kind of sneaky unkind equivocation.

"I find the words “Vegetarian” and “Vegan“ on packaging have been helpful over the years when shopping. I assume meat eaters find words like “Beef”, “Pork” or Chicken” equally as useful

It's almost like this is a non issue and we should let people eat what they like.

Exactly; I’ve never eaten meat (hippy parents) and been vegan for 7-8 years. Never felt the need to inflict my views on anyone; just if you come to my house you aren’t getting a bacon butty.

And if you came to mine I'd feed you something you can eat cooked with pans/utensils which haven't touched animal products since they were last cleaned.

And I would be more than happy with that so I’ll be round at 7"

This is very Daily Mail.

Based vaguely off a grain of truth and twisted out of all proportion. And used as some vague justification for convincing their readership that they were correct to vote leave.

Nope. Hamburgers is from being invented in Hamburg..

The term 'hamburger' comes from Hamburg in Germany, where a minced beef style dish was first created.

And that's from McDonald's so it's gotta be true

"

That's what the EU has been doing year on year. There was an issue with Cadburys chocolate which apparently didn't have sufficient cocoa powder in it to call it chocolate, then there were British sausages, for similar reasons, not enough pork/beef, there was issue with pork pies, potted shrimps, meatball and pasta to name a few.

Well I am not one of those constantly slagging off the Daily Mail.. I do look at all papers and Guardian in the same bracket..

Like most newspapers.. never let the truth get in the way of a good story...

False equivalence. All papers get things wrong. All sources slant. Some *way* more than others.

When it matters to me I seek out the source material. Here, I just see the normal beat up. "

Well suggest you research the thread directly with EU sources.. simples...

I haven’t read the entire thread because forget that noise, it’s too long. However, I and many of my friends are veggie/vegan and we honestly don’t give a fuck what they’re called.

Want to call it vegan chicken? Cool by us

Want to call it “this is not chicken”? Go for it

Want to call it pink alternative plant based slices? Also fine

What we do find amusing is that the dairy and meat industry seem to be so frightened of this that they’re lobbying for alternative labelling as if they think it’ll make a difference (heh irony). Half of the producers of veggie/vegan “alternatives” also make products with meat and/or dairy in them so they won’t care. The other half will just use clever wording to 1) get around the law and 2) stick a big fuck you to those industries

This.. Succinct and sums it up perfectly.. no hidden agendas with newspapers or Brexit..

Common sense prevails on the doorstep of those doubters and haters

Pretty much.

And no ta, Tom. It doesn't interest me that much. The dialogue around vegetarians and vegans, and the best up around the EU but not other organisations, interests me more. (And frankly I'm fact checking *quite enough* right now)

I'm people watching.
