Where my musical tastes were forged and continue to be informed to this day - at one time I had every single ever released on Two Tone except for the accidental release of I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down by Elvis Costello that was quickly withdrawn and is now worth a bomb.
Such an exciting time for music and the thing is, everyone thinks "ska" when they think Two Tone, yet it was anything but - sure there was a good dose of it, but The Specials took punk, reggae, ska and other stuff to make a sound of their own, Madness had pub rock, Ian Dury and Roxy Music along with ska as their influences, The Beat had all sorts.
The fact that all of those bands, and other associated ones (The Selecter, Bad Manners etc) are still plying their trade and still filling venues (or were till COVID) in some shape or form and mostly not as good time nostalgia bands, speaks volumes to the genre too. |

"Too much too young Ghost town and mirror in bathroom were classics not forgetting Madness as well .... those were the days lol  "
Those still are the days - all of those bands are still going in some shape or form and still releasing new stuff |

Where do I start?
Madness went pop, Bad Manners also went towards pop, so did Dexy's while wearing dungarees, Specials split to become Fun Boy Three, The Beat Split to form General Public and later Fine Young Cannibals.
Nowadays Madness sound crap, Terry Hall is a arrogant rude prick, saw him in concert, came on half hour later, pissed up, kept forgetting the words, stopped the songs and restarted, didn't do a encore, couldnt get out the venue quick enough, whereas Neville Staples is a great guy to chat with, met him and his wife Christine in a bar in town and he was happy to chat with us for hours, even shared a round of drinks with us, and then met them both in a reggae gid in Camden Town in London a year later and he came up to me and carried on our chat as if it was yesterday, UB40 still sound good even after all these years, Selecter still playing the crowds, but one band that I wished had lasted was The Bodysnatchers, only did 4 songs in all, but really liked them. |

Off all the types of music i liked and danced to i have never tired of 2 Tone its will always get me on the dance floor with a smile. Have seen quiet a few tribute bands over the years who do a fine dam job of keeping the music alive. The best one i ever saw is Skabucks if you get the chance go and see them promise you a really great night. |

Don't really need the tribute bands as most of the main players are still going in one form or another:
Madness - original line-up minus Chas Smash
The Beat - original songwriter and all round top bloke Dave Wakeling is keeping the sound alive (RIP Roger)
The Specials - down to three of the originals now but Encore was a great album
The Selecter - at least two of the original line up
Bad Manners - Buster is still going strong and whilst the rest of the band is new people pretty much he really was the band back in the day
There are of course some great covers bands out there but while the originals are still going would much rather see them |
