This about sums it up - sadly something I didn't know when my phone recently crashed and I switched back to my old one while it was being repaired - lost almost a years worth of messages!!
You need to firstly ensure that you have back up running - if you've not then there's nothing you can do.
If you do/did have back up running then as Testarossa says you should be able to retrieve those messages in the way she describes - the *only* thing you need to remember is *not* run back up on the new device before restoring - if you do then you'll have lost everything already backed up as WhatsApp only saves one back up. |

Daily backup should be on by default unless you switched it off
