Was chatting with a friend about hotels and I said I fancy staying in peckforton castle in Cheshire.
I’ve looked at crazy bear in beaconsfield a few times but the prices are indeed crazy.
My favourites are Coombe abbey in the West Midlands and Hazlewood castle near Leeds.
I’m always looking for nice places to visit so hit me with your suggestions |

Not a hotel but best place we stayed in was a log cabin in Cambs. It was so lovely and they just bring you a cooked brekkie if you want it.
I’d choose that every time now. |

That sounds lovely any more details?
I had found a shepherds hut in the middle of a field near York with its own hot tub. I was booked to go but then covid happened |

Exactly, I particularly love hotels that are posh but a bit quirky or full of character.
Some of those mentioned on the thread look great outside but the rooms lack interest.
I found a place on air bnb in Scarborough that looks interesting. Describes itself as a boutique hotel. |

I need to look at these. I always thought they’d be really expensive x"
They're often around the same price as an average hotel, but usually with a kitchen...perfect for a sexy man to get up and make you a bacon butty for breakfast |

Don’t do it. It’s one of the worse places I stayed. A old fwb used to basically live in hotels in Grantham due his job. That place was shockingly bad. The wallpaper was even upside down in one room.
Visit the grounds, wander round the main areas, avoid staying at all costs. |

The Grand hotel, Scarborough. Opened in 1867.
The detail of the design intrigues me.
The building is designed around the theme of time: four towers to represent the seasons, 12 floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys symbolise the weeks, and originally there were 365 bedrooms, one for each day of a non-leap year. |

Stayed at the Crazy Bear it wasn’t all that to be honest.
If I’m in town I like to stay at the Ned.
My favourite hotel was one just outside Bath that I used to go to with the ex. It was in a stately home and each room had a lovely big bath in the bedroom and huge four poster beds with a lovely open fire. I can’t for the life of me remember it’s name. I’ve probably tried to blot it out to be honest. |

Very special .....with the most beautiful pubic areas ...but also the stairways and corridors make the mind wander beautifully
and amazing for a sexy rendezvous ...unforgettably so
( also it was made famous in ..Eyes Wide Shut ..)

Some lovely converted barns on AirBnB, fraction of the cost of s hotel suite.
For hotels, like the suites at Malmaison Piccadilly Manchester, they have one with an iron spiral staircase, 4 poster and huge patio and balcony |

It's really lovely. The gardens and sculptures are wonderful too.
I was going to say Cliveden House in Berks but that's not cheap either. It's very much a place for celebrating occasions or wanting to feel special. Go in the summer and take a picnic boat on the Thames (true style).
If you want somewhere a bit quirky with a bit of history, the Landmark Trust has some unique self-contained properties. |

"Booking.com or some other search engine? "
As an experienced Hotel Manager, one thing to say about Booking.com and other booking agency sites is that many privately owned hotels will NOT use these sites, due to the amount of commission each hotel has to pay each agency.
I know of an ex colleague of mine who is now elsewhere in the UK, and his hotel in the financial year ending March of this year, had excellent occupancy in those past 12 months, mostly from these agencies, but his Commission bill to Booking.com alone was £145k!!
There were similar amounts paid to other agencies.
Now, post-Covid lockdown, hotels are beginning to dump these agencies and instead are encouraging people to book direct, often offering discounts to lure people to book. |

Yes and I was a bit disappointed. The room was rather run of the mill; nice enough but you want the oooft factor. The F&B service was crap to be honest. It could be so good but I think it banks on the name, location and the initial grandeur to stun guests a bit. |

OP mentioned the prices of the crazy bear in beaconsfield... unless you tow a caravan around and are a tree surgeon or tarmac drives I’d give it a miss.
Le Manoir which isn’t a million miles from me is even off the price scale of what the crazy bear is... but is beyond classy. |

Agree OP about Coombe Abbey, you may also like to try for good food and nice settings:

If into self catering look at Landmark Trust or Forest Holidays.

Get a flight to Amsterdam and stay in Hotel De Hallen (in a converted tram shed)
It's one of my favourite hotels
Warning: Only 3 or 4 of the rooms have external windows
Gastwerk in Hamburg is in a converted gas works - that was fab too
OK, I know I missed the brief, but I'm not a great fan of 'posh' hotels in the UK - they always seem a bit snotty (to me)
Although... I love the suites at The Royal York x |
