If my life wasn't so busy I would love to do some volunteer work.
Do any of you do volunteer work and what do you do?
Our sons rugby coach volunteers his time every Sunday morning and always turns up with such enthusiasm. We admire him. |

Yes, I do
I work for a charity helping women and families overcome severe postnatal mental health illness.
Its hugely rewarding, I feel like I make a difference but only sorry I cant devote more time to it.

I’ve done outreach volunteering with homeless people and soup kitchens over the last few years. I’m now lucky enough to be employed in the sector so am receiving additional training for outreach over winter in the evenings and weekends. It’s something I’m passionate about so very rewarding. |

I do the former as well, and holding my breath as we might go back in person. It's incredibly tough going at the moment, the effects of all of this have been startling in some ways. Drawn on to do things way outside the normal remit. But we muddle through.
I'm also involved in the background in a local anti racism campaign. |

I got my mum a job when she retired working in the coffee shop for royal voluntary service (old WRVS). I'm probably written out of her will now. She does love it though. |

"I'd love to volunteer to a mental health charity, as a sufferer myself, who better to help others than someone with experience of it "
This is so true, as long as the volunteer is fit and well.
Go for it

We used to volunteer at a garden place that grows veg for the poor of the big cit’s and helps reformed addicts and teaches school kids about stuff out doors which was fun.
And when back in England we ran twenty football teams which was a thankless task but it was great being able to help the less fortunate kids.

Been a volunteer youth football coach for eight years now. Been with this one, current, group for five. Love my wee team!
Used to volunteer at a local animal shelter until last year. I would do early morning shifts but ultimately couldn't carry on with work and other commitments unfortunately.
I'd strongly urge any and everyone to look into their local shelters and give what you can; be it old bed clothes, towels, blankets. Every little really does help! |

I volunteer in a charity shop.
When I was in my 20s did a six month placement helping older mentally ill people who'd been in a psychiatric hospital most of their lives and were now living in the community. It was organised by CSV (now known as VolunteeringMatters). It was one of the best things I've ever done. |

Yup, I volunteer on the committee for my wheelchair basketball team, I look after funding applications and fundraising stuff. I also volunteer with a university who partner with my workplace to mentor students and young people. I have in the past volunteered to go into schools to run Science enrichment activities and with a charity for people with certain health problems, but I had to give up some of my voluntary work when I ended up with the disability and still working FT. |

Oh... It's not volunteering per se, but it's helping. I do Folding@Home on my computer. Lending processing power to universities doing medical research. I set it to "high priority" and let it run. It's almost always Covid-19 related. |

Used to do that back in the 2000s lending my 56k modem and processing power to cancer research overnight.
I don’t use a PC now otherwise I would do it again. |

I’ve volunteered for guide dogs for the blind (a collector), the WRVS (a cafe in a magistrates court, the blood donor sessions and meals on wheels), a toddler group, a rainbows leader, Sunday school teacher and class assistant. Right now I don’t volunteer as I have my hands full with work, the pup, a poorly mum and the kids - one of whom has mental health issues.
When I win my millions I’ll be back volunteering though! |

It was really great fun. At the time I was unemployed and it was suggested as something to do. I mostly helped out in a day care centre and did a day trip to the seaside. Met some great characters and had some interesting conversations. |

I've had to dip into it a bit with what I do. Not my remit. I managed, but fortunately I have a long, strong rapport with the people I'm working with. |

I have often thought about training to be a bereavement counsellor when I retire.
